Inside Cyprus' $150 Billion Abandoned City

Varosha used to be one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. It was once a world-class beach resort and visited by many famous movie stars and wealthy business executives. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the resort was expanding and luxury hotels were being built along the beach. Today, the resort is a ghost town because Turkey invaded the area in 1974. Residents fled the area and the beach resort was fenced off. Today, the resort sits behind three military zones, and Varosha is completely surrounded by chain-link fencing topped with barbed wire. Military officials watch over the area from guard towers and UN helicopters circle overhead. Nature has completely taken over. The streets are empty and weeds are growing up through the cracks in the pavement. The luxury hotels are abandoned and falling down. The beach is barren except for debris and rusted beach umbrellas. Varosha once had a bustling Toyota dealership, but now it’s falling apart and filled with sports cars that are covered in dust and dirt. Varosha’s shopping district was once filled with stores that sold designer outfits, but those stores have been looted and only tattered rags remain. Varosha’s waterfront is blocked off by buoys, so you can’t even sneak in by water. If you tried, guards would surely catch you. Here’s a secret look inside Varosha. You will be one of the first visitors allowed into the ghost town in decades. Get ready to see what’s left of Famagusta’s Varosha beach resort.

1974
Our family was on vacation in Famagusta for 3weeks.
I was 11 yrs old and lived at the beach… my family had rented the penthouse apartment directly across from the beach and one evening just at dusk I saw from our balcony a raft beach and called my family over to see. They didn’t see anything and brushed it off as an imaginative kids imagination…
That night we were awoken by the sounds of explosions and our phone ringing telling us to get the F to the airport
I’ll always remember this amazing island and its beauty… but mostly the warm generous people.
War sucks

I always remember when we went to Cyprus, we spoke to a family who ran a cafe, they owned a house and had 2 cars… they thought they’d be able to back so left the newer car behind, they had only just decorated & and had everything they had worked hard for! They lost everything and still to this day wonder wether they will ever be able to go back to their house!

👋Wow, what an incredible presentation of Varosha! You really captured its history and atmosphere in such a compelling way. I explored Varosha in one of my videos too, but I must say, the depth and perspective you brought here is truly inspiring. Your storytelling and visuals are on another level—amazing work! Keep it up!👍

The way he says Cypriot really grated on me, it's sip-(like taking a small sip from a cup)-ree-ot. I used to live not far from Famagusta, we used to travel across to the North (Turkish) side quite often for knock off sports gear and cheap gold. There are a lot of abandoned ghost towns and villages along the border. The road i travelled daily to school ran parallel to the border Turkish guard towers on one side of the wire mirrored by UN guard towers on the other side of the wire. It was called the wire because it was literally a single wire atop 4ft rebar looking poles.
