"the trees were made of wood." That were good times.

"They were dying even though they were still on EARTH!" Let that sink in. LOL.

To anyone wondering why he said "the trees were made of wood"...

It's a contrast to the Mars voyage. Back then, the ships were made of wood, so if the ship broke down in the newly habitated place, the pilgrims could easily repair it. There was no difference between Europe and America - the trees were made of wood in both places. The vegetation was very similar.

But it's gonna be different on Mars. There's no material to use if your spaceship breaks down, no air to breath, etc.

Earth is a nice place, we should take care of it.😊

So many people are hearing a "whoooosh" above them right now. He's stating the obvious because the obvious things aren't available on another planet. There won't be materials already there like wood to rebuild your supplies, food to eat, air to breathe. Picking out parts of statements and looking dumb instead of taking it as a whole..this is why comprehension is scored separately on tests. 🤦🏾

Just the fact that the human body is finely tuned to life on earth should deeply concern anyone who tries to leave.

One of the first books I read for myself, not because school told me to was this little sci-fi book called "Farmer in the Sky" by Robert Heinlein. He described how any colonization effort usually started out with a success rate of 30% (if I recall correctly), and that building upon those that succeeded and learned increases that number. A great starter book that gives a nice short story to just this analogy :)

I'd like to see him talk about the decreased gravity and how it would effect the body.

"... or that they're going to voyage off the edge of the universe."
I like the little snark in his tone and the smile when he says that.

And there were already people here. The indigenous people had solved a lot of the problems the pilgrims experienced.

In Massachusetts the deaths on the trips and in the early colonies are spoken of often in schools there.

All these commenters who are making fun of Tyson because he said the trees were made of wood, are misquoting him. He said: "The trees were made of wood so they could repair their ships." Big difference.

At least the one thing that's known about Mars is that there ain't no poisonous fruits, that's a huge plus!!

It’s good to listen to someone intelligent enough to explain the fallacy of certain “ideas” which have captured the popular imagination.
