The black (with orange/red spikes) caterpillars are Pipe Vine Swallowtail caterpillars. They are the ones that eat the leaves and flowers. The butterflies themselves just lay eggs on the plants. If you see reddish brown caterpillars with the same spikes, those are Polydamus Swallowtail caterpillars. Monarch caterpillars are black, yellow and white stripped. They normally are on various Milkweed plants. I am building a butterfly garden so I have had to learn a few things about them. Came here to learn how to get myself some more Pipe Vines as the caterpillars just decimate mine.

Aristolochia means excellent sergeant in Greek. I live on a beach in Greece, I have had this evergreen plant for 20 years. It has a lot of blooms, but I never saw seeds.

Beautiful! But this is not A. macrophylla. This looks like A. littoralis - the flower is a dead giveaway. The former is native to north america, the latter is not. Both cool plants

Your plants are beautiful and the caterpillars are from the pipevine swallowtail.

That's not A. macrophylla. You have A. littoralis. 😉. Please research and make comparisons. There is a significant difference.

Butterflies don't eat leaves or flowers. Monarchs don't lay eggs on anything but milkweed. The caterpillars are Pipevine Swallowtail.
