I never was lucky or occasioned to see Senor Placido Domingo in person. However, from those who were quite fortunate to have seen him and heard him in person, they stated that it was always a spell-binding experience to be in his presence and hear him sing. His, I was told, was the strongest and most DRAMATIC male voice in the opera realm.

When I went to the dress rehearsal of MACBETH last Saturday I had no idea I was seeing Domingo's farewell to the Met and New York City. I've been enjoying Domingo's performances since before his Met debut in 1968. The only thing I know about his so-called sex crimes are that they are anonymous accusations and were supposed to have happened some twenty years ago. The one woman who went on NPR described an annoying flirtation and admitted that her career had not suffered in any way for rebuffing his efforts. On the other hand, I have personally witnessed a number of women shamelessly throw themselves at him on more than one occasion. Domingo is a victim of "zero tolerance, " a handy policy that absolves those in charge of having to think or make tough decisions based on actual evidence. They just cave to the public mood for moral righteousness, in this case. Meanwhile, a serial rapist sits in the White House, above the law. The Met is going to miss those sold-out houses; it was about two thirds empty for a beautifully sung MANON last night.

"Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul to waste

I was 'round when Jesus Christ
had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
is the nature of my game"

(And so on and so forth)
