** I really got into Priest while I was in AmeriCorps. I had started listening to them again just because I wanted to, but then I found Glenn Fricker's channel and he talkes about JP a bit on his show. So that pushed me more into listening to them. Then, I was listening to "Beyond the Realms of Death" while I was out for a walk, but kept thinking it was "Suite Madame Blue" from Styx. Turns out that the intros are similar and they are in the same key! I then tried my hand at one of those song mash-ups (like Mother was a rolling stone. Look it up if you don't know it). My mash-up wasn't very good though so I took it down. Part of the reason it wasn't great was I just took the original songs and cut/paste them on top of each other. I don't know where to find the original stems or individual audio tracks or anything. That would have made it just a little less terrible xD.
Well, I was going through my playlists on my channel and sprucing them up a bit, taking out any deleted or private songs and I stumbled across my JP playlist. I played quite a few of them, but they didn't have tabs. I like the songs, and so I made a poll asking which I should cover again (but with the tabs). I had about 20% of the people say I shouldn't do any, 20% said I should do them all agian, 5% for each of the others, and then 50% of the people wanted Breaking the Law, so that's how I came to re-cover it.
As far as tabbing goes, it's fairly straightforward. Mostly straight 8th notes, following the guitar. The outro is a little easier to hear some of the note switches, but it's the same as the verse, but with the chorus sung on top of it.
Also, in the chorus, the synchopated 14 on the g string is annoying to tab. not because it's hard to tell what it is but because I don't like putting in an 8th rest right there, but It's not long enough to be a tied note, but a stacatto quarter isn't quite right because it spans over two notes. The quarter note would make the start of the 2nd note not very clear.
In the live videos, It's clear Ian Hill is using a pick with alternate picking. It's also fairly hard to find a video showing him in the chorus
This video did not help me tab out whatsoever, but I thought it worth including because as I looked for videos, this was the first one I found and the crowd sang the whole song. Rob didn't sing any of it and it's truly amazing how much the crowd loves the band and the song to do that. Check it out if you get the chance
0:28 You can see Ian Hill at the 5
0:58 same thing
1:34 you can hear the solo, and see some of it too. He's sticking to the 5
1:00 you can easily hear Ian Hill play the slide, rather than just being in the mix. It's 14 on the A string. Not what I was expecting, but that's what I was hearing
0:57 Here, it shows Ian Hill playing 9 on the G. It's a good clear shot, but very short, so I had to go to half speed. You can clearly see the string that was picked and his pinky on that fret. It then goes to show him playing open A (Not 5 on the E) and then set up the next slide in the same spot.
1:38 you see Ian Hill in the solo playing on the 2 on the A, not 7 on the E
1:18 This Video confirms in the solo it is 2 on the A
Thanks for watching! Enjoy :)
