One drawback is that whenever RBI announces dates to buy these bonds, the price goes up and then falls after the booking date ends. So it is a net loss initially. RBI should have booking dates every month.

One very important fact that almost certainly all SGB videos have missed is about which price the 2.5% interest is calculated on. It's the bond issue price of the SGB. If you want to hold a bond for 8 years you will also would want to get the most interest, so you pick the most expensive listed gold bond. Until now, it was SGBAUG28V which was listed at ~5300 and now with recent spike in gold price, it's SGBMAR31IV which is listed at ~5600. This atleast helps me pick which gold bond I should keep buying every month.

Gold is seen as an hedge against hyperinflation and Govt instability risks. So the safest option for gold is always physical gold. Rest everything is a piece of paper, so there you can always go for many better alternatives like stocks, ppf etc.
