I love Google's take on VR. They made a DIY cardboard cutout headset which uses your phone and said that's enough.

4:10 "the success of any new tech hinges on the degree to which it enables p- consumption" wise words from a wise man

I liked what Apple did with the front-facing screen, attempting to address the issues people had when interacting with Google Glass. Like, the screen flash when a picture is taken, so people don't feel they're being secretly recorded, or letting the eyes show through, so people know that they actually have the wearer's attention.

But I think ultimately, VR and AR headsets might have to be separate devices. VR requires that the environment be fully blocked out, so a big visor seems necessary. But for AR devices to become mainstream, they have to be lighter and less obtrusive.

The pro version implies a normal version is coming. I think that will be the make or break. It has to be reasonably priced, well specced, and have dev support which is what the pro version is for, early adopters and devs.

$3500 is the same price as the HoloLens so I think that’s what they’re trying to emulate here, more for business than for consumers. But we’ll definitely see people walking around to let us know how much money they have

12 millisecond latency due to the R1 chip is incredible. John Carmack kept complaining about not being able to get those kind of speeds since there is so much bloat from a variety of manufacturers and abstraction layers. Around 30 milliseconds is the threshold for presence and not noticing lag in VR, so 12 milliseconds is excellent!

As someone who has actually developed eye tracking hardware and software I can state from experience that there are massive usability hurdles that will be difficult to get over. The gesture control with hands is i think an incredible breakthrough if it’s actually as good as they say. Foviated rendering I’ll be surprised if it works unless they can render along the saccade vectors. But really I think those things just look way too dorky to ever catch on and they still limit field of view too much

The crowd reaction be like: “Aww, only $3499?! So I don’t have to sell a kidney to increase my status symbol?”

I think the price is a sort of nod to “this isn’t meant for normal people” the same way that they’re selling a $999 monitor stand for a $3999 monitor. You’re not supposed to get it unless it’s not even a concern and you could just get it easily. As the technology succeeds they’ll release a Vision Air which is thinner, lighter, cheaper, with some features removed and a Vision with some features removed and a more clunky design. They always release the premium products first and then introduce the pricing ladder

Not only is this thing $3500, they are probably going to sell it for £3500 in UK (which is $4350)

This series is pretty funny already, but this episode made me crack up for almost the entire duration. Thank you Jeff

The Vision Pro is a direct competitor to the Enterprise Varjo XR-3 which costs $6, 495 and an ongoing subscription cost of $1495/year. I think it will be niche and never go mainstream, but for many niches it will be transformative.

I live for the code report, that ring bell at the beginning pumps so much serotonin through my brain, each time.

I think people should take into account that microsoft released a product that does similar stuff almost 6 years ago and it also sells for $3, 499 till this day

The vision pro is very exciting but the price is just 😬. Once the price and weight come down and battery life comes up, I could see this becoming very big

Fireship has slowly been drifting from information videos to memeformation and I love it.

I think it will work, it's a portable N-screen setup and as you can see through it, it seems likely that it will work well with non clunky input sources ex. A keyboard -> perfect setup

The code report series is the best thing that happened to youtube in the last 15 years

Could be interesting, but the "3d" photo's you can take, with the example of a dad with their daughter's birthday is INSANE. How have we become this for disconnected from reality?
