Don't get me wrong, I love a good tale of Zeus fuckery, but there's a lot amazingly creative and wonderful mythological and spiritual stories outside of Greek and Roman mythology. I didn't know anything about Cambodia, but this video was such a treat! I'd personally love to see more tales from other cultures from around globe.

For those who think the story isn't finished, you're right! They're still fighting. Ream Eyso is still looking for Moni Mekala and every time he's close to her, he throws his ax, which always misses. His ax produces the Thunder after the Lightning (Imagine Dragon ref). That's why every time you see a flash of lightning, you better brace yourself for a tremendous sound that follows. Eyso misses again! Poor guy, Moni Mekala is always a step ahead of him. This story is one of my childhood favorites. I've always been a fan, watching about other myths from around the world, but never had I thought TED would make an animation of it, and a great one too. Thank you for spreading knowledge about my country!

Manimekala is actually present in the tamil literature called “manimekalai” . She is the buddhist goddess of the sea and is believed to be the one who engulfed the port city of poombuhar.

I’m Cambodian! So proud of this!
Btw, Lok Ta means an old man/grandpa so it’s not actually part of his name, it’s just polite to address someone older

The animation is absolutely amazing. Ted Ed videos usually are, but this one just takes my breath away.

A diamond axe isn't a good gift it's just put 3 diamonds and 2 sticks into a crafting table.

Moni Mekhala resembles Krishna from Indian mythology, or is it just me?

Nice to see some Southeast Asian myths taking the spotlight; I've grown weary from the typical Greek, Roman and Norse myths

I was pleasantly surprised when the story went in the direction of how he was proud of all his students and loved them all like his children, so he decided to give them all a gift. It's some really positive mentor/parenting instead of the favoritism that is often shown in stories like this.
