These guys make reaching at 40+ MPH look like a leisurely sail. Good video. Thanks!

I now have a formula board. Now I REALY appreciate these silky smooth jibes!
If you live in a light wind area get a formula board. I love the juice in 10mph!

This video has persuaded me to start saving some money for a formula rig. Well done!

Thanks for posting this real world video. I wonder what that guy on the freeride gear was thinking? See far too many new windsrfrs go out and buy expensive new freeride gear and then go out in 10 knots with a 7.5 and wonder why they can't get powered up.

Sail size is 10 m². Wind speed was 7 to 12 kn.

Windsurfer is my friend Stojan Vidakovič.
His best results on windsurfing competitions:
11th. for Slovenia at Olympic games in Barcelona 1992,
1st. FW International CROATIAN CHAMPIONSHIP,
1st. Overall SLOVENIAN CUP IN FW.
He is still active and scores regularly top places on windsurfing competitions, slalom and formula.

On Starboard home page check out article Victory for Chris Pressler in Croatia.
Chris Pressler was participating at windsurfing competition Hallowind 2009, he was winner of slalom competition. Winner of formula competition was Stojan Vidakovič, he was using the same board you can see on the video.

According to sail calculator, with 55kg and 10m², you can get comfortably at plane with 7kn wind. If you use formula board and pumping 6 kn would be enough. Below that even light weight and bigger sail will not be enough. Problem is that relation between wind speed and energy of the wind is not linear, below 6kn force on sail, created by the wind is decreased dramatically. You have to consider also that even if you get planning with less than 6kn wind, your speed will be low.

His weight is 80 kg, his board is starboard formula 160.

wow! 7-12 knots! that's incredible, I'm 55kg, imagine how little wind i would need to plane!

Yeah, thanks for the information. I really want to try a formula board as the wind is often light in my spot.
