Mission Impossible's Dead Reckoning Pt. 1: Cliffhanger Explained

It’s time to start grooving to that 5/4 beat of the iconic Mission Impossible theme song, Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Pt 1 has finally arrive. But there’s a lot to unpack, because while this is a part one, the movie is the seventh outing for Ethan Hunt and his IMF team of Benji, Luther, and Ilsa. Joining the squad is Avengers alum Hayley Atwell playing Grace. Kittridge returns from the first entry in the series in the usual role of disgruntled boss who both needs Ethan’s rogue tendencies and is mad about them as well. New baddie Gabriel has a past that reaches before the movie series and gives us an insight into not only how agents are chosen, but why they are given the choice to decline with the iconic phrase, “Your mission, should you choose to accept it.”

This was easily the most satisfying ending to a "part one" in recent movie history -- way better than Fast X and Spiderverse. I left the theater satisfied with the natural cutoff point to the story, not feeling led on in the middle of a scene.

I hope that the sequel has more exploration of characters' backstories, particularly Ethan's and Gabriel's, and the IMF recruitment process, which would provide context for their actions and decisions. Gabriel, with his connection to Ethan's past, is poised to be a significant antagonist, and his goals will be central to the story.

It had the tried and tested MI action scenes, cars, shootouts, fight scenes, train rooftop duels. It has its loopholes but entertaining. 7/10

Obviously it was oceangate and skynet at it again. Hunt had foresight.

I liked how it was a cliff hanger but it wasn't..at least it wasnt framed like how fast x, spider verse, or even Deathly hallows had their cliffhangers, literally in the middle of something good.

DR 1 could stand alone in that it has a defined beginning middle and end

I don't like this ret-conning. The IMF team had a director we've seen him/her in previous movies, they don't report to the President, they don't live like Ghosts, Benji was a tech guy, Ethan was gettiing married at one point. Where do their passports and money come from if not the US government?
