Are Electric Dethatchers and Scarifiers The Same Thing

One of the most common points of confusion I see in people looking to dethatch a lawn is that they get all confused by the variety of equipment terms thrown around. Scarifiers and dethatchers are one example of two terms frequently used interchangeably but in the real word are actually describing two different but similar processes.

I should note that in this video I talk mostly about electric homeowner grade dethatchers and scarifiers but their are bigger commercial grade options available as well (which are usually rented by homeowners) that work similarly but are far more aggressive in the work they get done.

If you are considering buying an electric scarifier/dethatcher for use in your yard then make sure to see the following linked article on my website where I compare your best options as well as the most common options year-owners opt for.

►About Me◄
My name is Brian Mounts. I run the popular lawn care YouTube channel, Turf Mechanic, where I publish mostly long form lawn care guides and informational content.

This channel is different; I post mostly short-form videos on very specific topics in the lawn care space. My target audience here are people new to lawn care, those who have very specific questions about larger topics.

Hey, thank you for this video. So I am guessing that you dethatch first rake up the debris and then scarify, overseed and water is this correct?

I did my back yard a few days ago and it seemed like I pulled out mostly dead diseased grass, some good grass and a little bit of thatch.

The SENIX 13 AMP with the 15-Inch blades actually do remove taches that are as thick as 5 inch.

If you are looking to buy a dethatcher, I strongly recommend staying away from Sun Joe products. Company has extremely poor quality internal parts. When they fail, Sun Joe Support will tell you the parts are "wear and tear" and aren't covered under warranty. They also don't offer the parts as service parts, so you are forced to purchase a brand new unit. Email support only, so there is zero reasoning with them.

Can scarifying replace aerating the grass?

I have a 1800 sq foot front yard, and a 2000 sq foot back yard, Do you think i'd be better off going Cordless model or going Electric ??

Bonjour une petite question me titille, faut-il scarifier avec les lames avant d’aérer avec les griffes ou l’inverse ?

Is a scarifier like an aerator? Or would you Aerate still
