Boy George's 1970s Save Me From Suburbia (Boy George Documentary)

British pop star Boy George recalls, revisits and assesses how the 1970's moulded the person and artist he has become. This is his musical, social and sexual coming of age, when he discovered the power of his own sexuality before setting about turning that persona into a popstar. Set against a backdrop of social discord, disenfranchisement and sexual repression, the seventies was also conversely the decade that revelled in colour and creative chaos, giving the world glam rock, disco and punk, and the young George O'Dowd was at the birth of them all. The documentary includes contributions from contemporaries like Martin Degville (Sigue Sigue Sputnik), Andy Polaris (Animal Nightlife), DJ Princess Julia and popstar Marilyn. This is, as George said, 'the last ever bonkers decade', and it totally and completely shaped him.

Boy George says: 'I think of the 70's as being this glorious decade where I discovered who I was and discovered all these amazing things - punk rock, electro music, fashion, all of that. And yeah of course there was that dark side to the 70's, the rubbish, the strikes, the poverty, and I'd get chased and confronted for the way I looked. But I was a teenager. I didn't have any time for misery. I was just having a great time with my friends!

As a teen in the 80's I loved Boy George and always will. He is so down to earth in these documentaries.

I remember when he was young and reckless, dealing with his drug abuse and toxic relationship with Jon. When things got really bad, and his interviews were erratic, he would always say something profound that hit home with me. It was easy to see how smart he was, beyond the makeup, and the brand being created. He never struck me as shallow or superficial, but rather wise and insightful for his age. I remember, after seeing the footage where he passes out mid sentence, saying to my girlfriend "If he survives this crazy ride and lives to be an adult, he will be known for so much more than being just a drag queen pop singer." Under the make up, costumes, and posturing, the substance was always there. I'm so glad he has lived to experience it all. Great job, George!

This documentary makes me so nostalgic i feel for crying, though my time were the late 80's London was still this amazing place, to go into clubs, The Sanctuary Badlands on Tuesday night was my night, really you had to look the part to get in, heavens was just beside it, leaving the club at 3 am was a whole adventure....I look at my daughter now and i'm shocked not her or her friends ever go out, only from one home to the other, what has happened I don't understand...complaining about knife crime in London, who is surprised? no youth clubs no clubs no meeting places for young people no activities no political assemblies or unions, nothing, youth today have nothing but social media and dreams of becoming rich and beautiful through plastic surgery..so sad

Love Boy George. First time I heard Boy George I was hooked. He did have a nice soft voice, but the look was the winner. The 70's was bonker's.

Boy Georges narrative for this doco is really good. I like when he said "These days records are for hipsters but back in the 70s they were all we had".

I could listen to Boy George all day on any topic. He's smart, funny very talented and, well, one of the most gorgeous creatures of our time. Culture Club was short-lived as an international sensation, but I remember how stunning they were. A superb film about an era that I enjoyed immensely! 💃💐

This was one of
The ABSOLUTE BEST Celebrity Documentaries that I have ever watched... About any celebrity, Ever.

It tells a bit of the background that all admirers want to know about the people who make a name for themselves in this big ol' world, and become a significant part of our very own lives.
Meshing our collective historical experience together.
Bonding us in our shared time span on this planet.
Giving insight into what shaped the artist's flow of expression.

I am a 99.99% straight, hetero- monogamousist, who has lived a mostly conservative lifestyle.
Yet, even a person like myself, can adore and long to embrace, the essence of such a delightful human- being as Boy-George Alan O'Dowd

It's rare to watch a documentary from a music icon where he's still alive to tell the tale.

My parents were pretty conservative but loved Boy George when they saw him interviewed on Australian tv in 1984 because he had the guts to be himself, and he was intelligent and witty. That’s why people love him.

I thing George would have been a fantastic actor and commentator. He is very articulate and fluent, and on top of everything, he was funny.

When he first got famous in the US, I bought his album and watched him on MTV and my grandmother would say that she didn't care if he was a guy or girl, all she knew was Boy George could sing well. She was a big fan and ahead of her time ❤️😊

I've always thought of BG as a unique, vulnerable, stylish talent. Never a freak. His style and music stood out, it hasn't aged which is a sign of true talent.

At 3:04. Vinyl was a real part of the 80s culture. You could spend a whole day searching for records at shops. There were no less than 16 record stores in the downtown core of my city. And they had hard to find imports and the odd bootleg. New releases were incredible with at least eight good records per week. And bands could be seen live for less than $25. Those were good times.
