Aluminium is quite a reactive metal so is found in Earth’s crust chemically combined with oxygen as aluminium oxide. Aluminium oxide is found in an ore called bauxite which also contains iron oxide. Bauxite contains aluminium oxide, iron oxide and rocky impurities. The bauxite is separated into pure aluminium oxide and a rusty brown waste consisting of iron oxide and rocky impurities. Bauxite is extracted from the ground using open cast mining.
