Показать описание
Female Southern Right whales give birth to a single calf following 12 months gestation. Weighing about 1 ton and 4–6 m (13–20 ft) in length, the calf usually remains with its' mother during the first year of its life, during which time it will double in length.
Undisturbed time in shallow, sandy bottom bays and protected beaches is critical for southern right whale calves. At approximately 3-to-4 weeks, this calf needs to nurse and consume around 300 liters (80 gallons) of milk per day to gain the strength necessary for the long swim back towards the Antarctic.
Walker Bay in Hermanus, South Africa is the perfect nursery for this little one to learn about being a Southern Right Whale. Watch as it shows breaching action, gives us a great view of its' face and even does lobtailing.
