Rare, luxurious, expensive: how good is the new Bentley Batur?

The Bentley Batur costs £1.65m before local taxes, will be limited to just 18 examples and, in this prototype form, is the purplest car we've driven in years.

It's a Continental GT Speed-based limited-edition completed by Bentley's Mulliner coachuilding division. If you want the bare stats, it uses a 6.0-litre W12 engine making 740bhp (750PS) and 738lb ft (a nice round 1000Nm). It can go from 0-60mph in 3.2sec and has a 209mph top speed. But what's more interesting is that it's so bespoke to you that you can order 3D printed gold switches, if you choose.

As a former Rolls/Bentley Crewe employee it saddens me how the entire current range hasn't so much been poked by but thoroughly battered by the ugly stick by a designer who has no comprehension of the correct shape for a Bentley grille.

Grace, subtlety and style are sadly lacking and they add to the crime by making you drive one in that colour.

That alone is enough to stop me wanting one.

If this is Bentley’s future design language, I give up. Every manufacturer is tending towards being interchangeable, and similar to what might once have been a Hyundai or Toyota.

This has to be the single biggest styling misstep since Aston Martin butchered the V8 Vantage in 2018. No, this is worse. The Vantage was at least still recognizable as an Aston. The Batur looks like the Buick Avista concept from 2016; which is to say it looks like it's based on a Camaro.

So the speed version will be Master Blur? Its probably 6 or more times more expensive than the continental and you are getting the same interior and almost the same power. Its the same criticism drawn to the current Maybach vs Mercedes although in this instance the gap in price is multiple times larger. I can understand why you would go Rolls Royce over Bentley or Mercedes however, in instances like this it seems some people don't care about throwing money effectively down the bin. Put it another way, would you prefer getting a fully customised RR Spectre or spend 3 to 4 times more to get this Bentley
