I think algorithms have already been doing this, although maybe not with this express purpose. I'm an ally, with a family member in the community and numerous friends in the community. I hit like on a lot of their content. I've gotten random invites to join dating sites based on that, as well as other content in my feed that might be useful to someone in the community but isn't for someone who is just an ally.

I know that on YouTube there is a lot of targeting for other groups. I'm an atheist and watch a lot of Humanist content, and left leaning stuff, as well as a lot of mainstream news. A lot of those videos are targeted with ads for really far right sites that actively attack my right to be atheist and attack the rights of my friends. On one hand, it's ironic that their ad money goes to support channels I like, but on the other hand, some of their ads are just so offensive that I end up browsing YouTube with an adblocker most of the time, which hurts ad revenue for people I support. You can report channels that violate YouTube terms, but there are lots of ads out there that would violate their terms that they happily run.

Identifying minorities online through AI is NOT a power people or corporations should have. It can endanger these vulnerable groups.

I’m just very confused. I read the paper and it sounded more like they were trying to categorize people already flagged as LGBT based on LGBT words in their profile. But then they also stated that there was lots of overlap between the groups (duh) so I’m not exactly sure what their goal was. But this short made it sound like they were identifying LGBT individuals from the general population? I’m just confused.

This paper probably violates any ethics affidavit any university could ever come up with. No idea how it could get started, yet alone make it to publication?

You consent to this manipulation by using social media et al. These private products are not the users to control. Use it or don’t. Outrage may provide some temporary concessions to lull you back to apathy and acceptance. STOP using “social media”. If it’s “free” YOU are the product. This is a voluntarily abusive relationship. If you don’t remember life before the internet please use your imagination.

Sure, just target everyone else but discriminate the LGBT because they are special. It's the nature of social media to categorize their users.
