This is very true. I fell for this when I was young. I’ve watched others in my family fall for it. If someone asks my opinion when they are struggling, I tell them to deep dive into the scriptures, conference talks, CFM. When you do that you see that you are using your own self justification. And how you mislead yourself away.

I am a men’s marriage coach and the #1 issue with men (and women) is that, instead of taking ownership, they justify themselves in their own mind and balms their spouse.

This is called a cognitive distortion. Instead of facing up to the truth, they hide behind a lie to comfort their own insecurities and flaws.

P.S. we all do it. Like you said Greg, it’s a natural instinct. But it’s one we must strive to overcome.

And then there are those situations where people really need to take a much closer look at the things they believe (however they’ve arrived at those conclusions) and see if those beliefs actually hold water legitimately.

I’ve rarely seen people leave who’ve seriously made the decision to join this or any church on their own deeply involved study and work.

And that “deeply involved study and work” varies based on their opinion of what they think that means.

The church is the gateway… it’s not the path.
