So, Jiraiya was in the same team with a Hokage, was taught jutsu by a Hokage, and he trained two boys, father and son who both became Hokage.That is pretty impressive.He basically had ties with 5 hokages.

Edit: my view on the matter is he chose the 1st option. Nothing went right (Killing his family and be outcasted as a top tier criminal) but there was still something left (sasuke and the village). If he chose to do right (join the uchiha and remain loyal) then a civil war would happen and other villages would attack a divided leaf village resulting in nothing left (destruction of leaf and its people).
