I saw a documentary of a young man surviving this...horrible story. He bought himself a mask the day before...saved him a bit from suffocating.

One of our neighbors that was a farmer actually died in a silo a few years back, he was at the top of the silo while it was being filled and accidentally fell in and he immediately got buried. The firefighters came 30 minutes later, but it was already too late. His son tried to shut it off, but the switch was stuck, (the machine had an electrical problem because it was very old) everybody after hearing it said “what a way to go” I can’t imagine how horrible that feeling is getting buried alive.

A friend of mine father died when that happened to him. People witnessed everything but still couldn't save him. He was a good guy too

One other important thing. If you see someone fall in and cant reach them without breaching the confined space call for help and dont go in. Usually in grain elevator fatalities like this 2 or more die from trying to perform a rescue and falling in as well.

Falling into a grain bin

As a farmer I can say 95% of the time it's fine you can just stand on the grain it's very dense. It won't collapse unless there's an air pocket underneath that collapses and that's quite rare but does occasionally happen.

Making an air pocket in front of your face won't do anything. If you're buried up to your chest in grain you're fucked. Your chest has to expand against several tons of grain from all sides to breathe, and that's just not happening.

In fact, if you're buried only up to your knees, you are firmly stuck until rescuers can place a type of barrier around you to cancel out the weight and pull you out. If you ever fall into a grain silo for whatever reason, stay absolutely still and yell for help.

Thank you so much, Zack! I just feel into a grain bin, but now I’m okay because you. Thanks, Zack!

I don’t mention it a lot but I was buried alive when I was about 8. Me and my siblings were digging a tunnel on the beach, about 3 - 4 feet underground. It was less than a foot in diameter, and I tried to wiggle down into it while laughing. I remember them the whole tunnel shifted, and instantly it felt like being in a doggie pile with a bunch of adults. I could feel the sand around me, and flailed wildly, but my arms were tucked beside me. I screamed and wiggled my head making a small pocket of air. I remember how long it felt, sitting there calling my siblings names. None of them had noticed the small shift. My older sisters says she remembers walking back and thinking I had jumped ontop of the tunnel, until she noticed my feet wiggling in the sand, and realized I had been buried face first. I was probably buried first less than a minute, but it feels like hours. Still feels weird remembering that experience now.
