Battle of Sievierodonetsk - Animated Analysis

In the late Spring of 2022, Russian forces who retreated from northern Ukraine after failure to take the capital, Kyiv, shift their focus to the eastern part of the country, Donbas. Here, since 2014, parts of Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions have been occupied by Russian proxy states, LPR and DPR. On the border with them, Ukraine has some of its most capable troops, well dug in and reinforced prior to the invasion, as limited advance in Donbas was seen as one of the alternatives to what actually happened, full-scale war. After the redeployment of troops which failed to take Kyiv to eastern Ukraine, new Russia's strategy is to encircle Ukrainian forces on the east, destroying them once and for all, and annex the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions which will open the road to further conquest of central Ukraine. Even more ambitious plans circulate with a commander of Russia's Central Military District, Rustam Minnekayev, declaring that the aim of the "second phase" of the so-called Special Military Operation is to fully seize Donbas and Southern Ukraine, establishing a land corridor with Transnistria. On April 10th, Russian army general Aleksandr Dvornikov is appointed as a commander of all military operations in Ukraine. Move that further emphasizes the Russian plans to shrug off defeats of the past and regain momentum. Completely ignoring the enemy’s capabilities and how well-fortified and urbanized Donbas actually is, the Russians decide to attack in the direction of key cities of Sloviyansk and Kramatorsk, focusing their efforts on Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk first.

The video is great but some of the info is incorrect.
79th did not return to the rear to replenish. They sat in exposed trenches on a hillside outside Grigorivka eating artillery and sustaing heavy casualties through the end of July before moving to the rear. They didn't move to the rear in June as the video states. How do I know? I was there with the 1st International Company Ivan Bohun Brigade and we supported them and stopped the Russian advance on Grigorivka and lost several men July 18th and it was 79th brigade that we spoke to and helped.

It’s crazy how much the tactics have changed since 2022. At this time I didn’t see any FPV drones or gps guided bomb now it’s multiple videos a day of each.

The way Russia conducted its initial invasion of Northern Ukraine had to be some of the worst strategic planning I'd ever seen.

Can you battle for Chernihiv or Vuhledar? Both of them should be some of the biggest tank battles of the war.

With the benefit of hindsight, it becomes clear that the decision to defend Sievierodonetsk was mostly motivated by politics rather than military sense. If they had given the defense of the city on the wrong side of the river, maybe the could hold the front on the Siversky Donets and manage to defend Popasna, at least for more time.

I like this detailed way of analysis. Unfortunately, however, some bias is clear which makes me take every piece of information mentioned here with a pinch of salt

wonderful video. however, the north of the Lugansk region is not Donbass. he belongs to the Slobozhanshchina. Unfortunately, few people know this even here in Ukraine

Production value is good, but the creator just cannot set aside the bias in an otherwise decently narrated presentation. The pro-ukrainian bias is slightly toned down from the Mariupol vid, but still ever-present and distracting, even. A noticeably pessimistic tone when discussing Russian advances and the state of the attackers, while being needlessly optimistic about the Ukrainians while they still lose territory and cities, and emphasizing Ukrainian heroism. Its ok to have a bias, but at least admit it immediately so it does not have to be inferred.

It's amazing that Russia constantly loses throughout this battle, and yet they win.

I had army buddies that were in Seiveriedonetsk. They would hold choke points with machine guns n 2 mortar crews.
When the narrator says ruZZians advanced it leaves out how.
They would send wave after wave at the same time n same place over n over until it was pulverized.
Just dying.
They would march right into presighted kill zones day after day until it was just destroyed and mixed with the meat of the previous waves.
My friends had never seen anything like this.
We served in the gulf war.
They told me that they had to have been drugged.
They marched forward like zombies.
They killed so many and they just kept sending more.
No change of tactics.
So the loss of sievierodonotsk was incremental and brutal.
The amount of meat that moscovites waste to take a small town and the level of destruction they cause to do so is breathtakingly evil in the coldest way possible.

It's great material, you've had to put a lot of work into it. Not sure if it's done by 1 person, but quality suggests it took whole team to prepare such great video. Great job

I am from Russia, from the city of St. Petersburg, but I am wholeheartedly on the side of Ukrainians defending their homeland from Putin's aggression. Thank you for the interesting and informative reviews, I'm watching with interest!
