Hello there, in my opinion not necessarily a mosfet is bad if drain and source are 'connected' together: if either drain or source is connected to the ground (intended as per pcb construction) and the other part is shorted due to any issue somewhere in the trace that leads there, you have a connection between the 2 without the mosfet necessarily being faulty.
