GYMNASTICS SCORING: Simone Biles FX 2019 (D and E Score + Slow Motion Analysis!)

See how Simone’s power-packed AA floor performance was scored at the Stuttgart World Championships. This routine was super difficult — she mounted with a triple-double and dismounted with a Silivas! While this was by no means her cleanest or best performance, it still was more than enough to take home the gold medal.

I chose this routine because it had the best camera angles, and it didn’t have any commentary. The landings here were a bit rough compared to some other performances. In honesty, her best performance of this routine was probably the 2019 Team Final, which was just stellar — I’d definitely recommend checking it out if you haven’t seen it already!

This video from the FIG also had slow-mo replays right after Simone’s performance, which I thought would be helpful in highlighting why certain deductions were taken. The slow motion comes right after the performance. I hope that this is helpful for you!

Notes:
- I saw very few form deductions in this routine, most coming from her combination pass. She hit her splits and maintained good form for basically the entire rest of the routine.
- I was 50/50 on taking a deduction on her switch split full; I decided against it because she masked any balance issue that could’ve been there with choreography.
- Her Gogean was downgraded to a split full because she was around 90° under — I believe the guideline is 30° to credit a skill. The judges also scored it this way.
- I took off one tenth on her wolf turn because it was a bit over-rotated. The other tenth was for excessive preparation, including both her preparation and the arm swing prior to the element.
- The score doesn’t go up at her switch split leap because that was her 9th element — D-scores count the 8 most difficult skills, and that was the easiest.
- The Biles I landed on the line, which is in in gymnastics, so there was no 0.1 penalty on that pass.
- I saw no artistic deductions in Simone’s routine. She was creative, confident, and engaging; she had a complex movement.

I'm definitely not an expert judge, and I definitely make mistakes, so it's totally possible that there are some deductions that were missed. I'd love to hear feedback :). If you have any questions about certain deductions or have deductions of your own to talk about, feel free to comment below!

If you have questions, comments, ideas, or video requests, let me know! If you enjoyed the video or learned something, I would love it if you left and like and subscribed — it helps me out a lot :D. (I’m almost at 100 subscribers now; thank you to everyone who supports my channel!)

Actual score: 14.400 = 6.6 + 8.2 - 0.4

Video belongs to the FIG. This video falls under fair use because the video is educational: the purpose is teaching about the sport of gymnastics and how it is scored.

She knew she needed a lot of power and I think she had so much adrenaline is lasted throughout the entire routine 🫶🏽😍 ♾️🐐I loved how Simone shouted out how beautiful she performed her triple double. Idk what is it the Biles 3 or 4 😂.

You should judge older routines and see how they would compare to the 2017-present judging guidelines.

I see wolf turns and they look like something you sort of have to prep for. I wonder what a wolf turn without a prepare reduction looks like?

excessive preparation on the wolf turn?? i had no idea that was something that can get a deduction. do a lot of gymnasts get that deduction?

im confused... so a double double is worth 8 tenths, meaning the layed out version is 9 tenths so Simone only gains 1 tenth for doing the triple double?

Not to downplay her routine - she's amazing. But I would deduct 0.1 on the Biles for leg separation, even though her toes are touching, there's a big gap between her legs. She is so strong acrobatically but she lacks a bit of precision in leg and toe extension and alignment I think

It could be a fun challenge to make the maximum E-score FX with her 2019 routines.

Flex feet or not she’s not losing to anyone on floor anytime soon. Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble :)
