Using this feature, you can not only edit vertical video natively in iMovie, you can also import and convert landscape video into vertical video and edit that! Another tip: the export method (export file) in this clip generates a low quality movie when working with HQ footage (ie 4k). choose "app preview" to get the original quality, it will generate a MP4 too.

For anyone else wondering this, you can even remove the vertical video in the beginning and it'll preserve the frame size! So for me I just dumped in any vertical video from my phone, then removed it after I saw it had correctly setup the orientation for a vertical video and continued editing the footage I had that was landscape. Worked an absolute charm, thank you!!!
