SLR VS Rangefinder Cameras...Which Film Camera Suits You Best ┃35mm Film Photography

Hey everyone! In this video I go over some of the differences between 35mm SLR film cameras and 35mm rangefinder cameras. Neither one is better than the other and they both serve a valid photographic purpose. They both have merit and they are both fun 35mm film cameras to shoot. In particular I compare my Nikon FA to my Konica IIIA and I use them to represent their respective platforms. Would love to hear what you shoot in the comments and I hope you enjoy this video and that it is helpful to someone who's considering getting into film photography.

Hey guys in this video I mistakenly said "5 millimetres" a few times and of course I meant 5 centimetres or 50 millimetres. Thanks so much to everyone who watched and engaged in the comment. Love you guys!

I shoot rangefinders and SLRs. Love them both.

My favorite rangefinder is a Leica M6 with 21/35/90mm lenses. I love to use my rangefinder when I need to shoot quietly and discretely at funerals and golf tournaments.

My favorite SLR is a Nikon F2 that I use with two dozen Nikkor lenses that range in focal length from 14mm to 1000mm. I love to use my SLR when I need to configure the camera for the assignment. The camera configuration I need for macro photography is entirely different from what I need for fast action sporting events.

I'm a huge fan of the rangefinder type cameras, until I realize I forgot to remove the lens cap.

These two cameras are probably that the top of their respective classes: the IIIA is unquestionably the best fixed lens, meterless rangefinder 35mm camera ever made; the FA is the last and best featured of the FM/FE series. My experience was with the FE2, and I admit that I have rarely shot my IIIA, mainly because i rarely shot any 35mm in the last 30 years. Apart from its heft, the IIIA is a dream to use.

I like longer videos like these. You go very in depth. I have been burned (well, just wasted time) watching many videos that are just the same going over the basics assuming the viewer knows nothing. So when I see a longer video, I immediately know that there is something good in there.

Btw, the music was a bit strange, there is a high pitch sound at times and on headphones or loud volume it becomes shrieky.

The Ricoh 500 RF does in fact have the option of a motor drive. As I understand it, they are something of a collectors item with the motor drive.
Also, the Konica Hexar RF has motorized automatic film advance and rewind, and the Konica Hexar AF also includes auto focus - but the AF has a fixed 35mm f2.0 lens and a maximum shutter speed of only 1/250.
Where the Konica Hexar AF really has the edge is the silent mode, where the film advance is very very quiet.

I shoot both but I find rangefinder easier to focus.

Nice video. I have an FA and a Yashica MG-1 rangefinder. It usually depends on my mood which one I choose. Here's a question for you. Which eye is your dominant and which eye do you use shooting? (from the video it's the right, but that could just be for the video). Usually with rangefinders, the right eye is used - because you can use both eyes to look at the scene and have the viewfinder edges+focus "projected" on the scene, but my right eye sight isn't optimal, so I use the left for everything (SLR and RF) so this advantage is gone.
