Painting is one of the simplest and least expensive ways to increase the overall value of your home. Since interior painting is a relatively inexpensive way to update your home, it can be one of the best tools to make your home a more comfortable & happy place. Most of the interior walls are made of materials that naturally absorb moisture with time. Too much absorption can lead to compromised walls which can be dangerous to your home’s structural integrity. That's why the paint is designed to seal out moisture from getting into the porous walls of your home. It also improves the air quality in and around our homes. To calculate the exact quantity of paint required, various factors come into play like the area to be painted, type of paint used and the condition of walls. A freshly plastered surface needs 1 to 2 coats of wall putty, 1 coat of primer, and at least 2 to 3 coats of paint.
Let's illustrate this method by quoting an example in which we need to paint the interiors of a room.
wall putty:
The required quantity of wall putty depends upon the nature of the surface. If the plastered area has a very rough finish, we might need to do 3 coats of wall putty for the perfect wall finish.
If the surface finish is acceptable, then we can assume consumption of approximately 1.2 – 1.4 sq meter per kg for 2 coats and 0.75 – 1.2 sq m per kg for 3 coats of Wall Putty.
Primer:
A primer is a preparatory coating put on walls before painting. Priming ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface. It increases paint durability and provides additional protection for the material being painted. It can be applied on freshly cured plaster and gives excellent opacity to the walls.
primer coverage area is 11 to 13sqm per litre for 1 coat.
Paint:
For new walls, the coverage area of paint is 8sqm per litre with 2 coats and for old walls, the coverage area of paint is approximately 13.33sqm per litre with a single coat.
