How Learning Languages Changed My View of the World

Learning a new language is not simply memorizing a new set of words. Because of the way language is intertwined with culture and history, you're actually learning a new way of thinking and seeing the world. I know I'm a major nerd but I find that incredibly exciting. It also doesn't have to be this impossible, insurmountable task. So, I thought I would share my experiences learning French, Spanish and Italian.

It's funny because English, ie the language of this video, is a second language to most of us viewers anyway lol

When I was learning English and Spanish I didn't really feel an "expansion of my mind" but I actually felt just an expansion of my sources of knowledge and ways to communicate, now I'm trying with Mandarin and I'm finally experiencing that expansion in my vision of the world

See kids, if you learn languages you too can go from sitting on the floor to having your portrait taken in the street :D

your first video about learning Italian has inspired me so much that I'm now learning French in a fast-track way. I've never learned another language before and I thought I'd hate it. But come to find out, I'm actually loving it so far! Not only that, but because of this, I've found something to help me get out of bed in the morning. It's helping me climb out of the depression that I've been battling with for years. Thanks Nathaniel. Thanks for not only making these language videos, but for putting the amount of work into it that you do. The inspiring filming and editing makes the difference between someone like me seeing it as "oh that's pretty cool." and "wow that's incredible! I want to try that too!"

Hello Nathaniel, I must confess, each time I learn a little bit more about your vision of the world I get more impressed and I couldn't agree more. I'm a brazilian who lived in France for two years (2015-17), and this experience also opened my eyes to see how learning a new language and a new culture can make you see things from a new perspective. Ton français franchement est incroyable, nickel. In questo momento io sono anche imparando italiano, sono veramente molto contento di facerlo, è una lingua apassionante. We see many people criticizing others in the internet today, I just wanted to do the opposite, love your work, keep up with it. Cheers from Brazil, hope someday you'll also learn portuguese :D

I come from a small country in Europe (Slovenia) and the majority of people speak at least 2 foreign languages. We don't really have a choice since we have to communicate with foreigners pretty often (whether it is inside our country or when we go abroad for shopping, vacation or work).

This is exactly how I felt with Turkish, when we would visit family and friends in Turkey. I felt stuck like I couldn't engage in conversation that I was bursting to have. At age 20, I was offered an opportunity by my aunt to live with her in Istanbul and learn Turkish fluently. I made my decision within 4 hours but I waited for 2 weeks to really assess if this is what I truly wanted. Best decision that I made for myself. It certainly expanded my relationship and love for my grandpa being able to speak in Turkish with him. I'm the only one in my family that speaks Turkish fluently in the States. I desire to learn Arabic or Italian next.
