Why is ChatGPT being banned in schools?

It's time to adapt .. instead of fearing or banning new technology, why not embrace it and use it to our collective advantage? Instead of worrying about ChatGPT "giving you the answers" to the test, why not focus on the critical thinking required to ask it smart questions? Why not educate around that? Something to ponder 🧠

This is a terrible take.. as an engineer, chatgpt literally does the exact opposite of what he’s saying. It doesn’t promote critical thinking to simply input a phrase which was handed to you by your teacher on a homework sheet. Also, if you think school is about memorization, something tells me you didn’t actually try in school. All of these anti-schoolers went and learned things that if they truly understood how to benefit from schooling, they would’ve learned from schooling.

But you can also argue that an AI generating ideas can also kill students’ creativity

I half agree and half disagree. If students are using ChatGPT to have it formulate entire essays, then that's a problem. If they're just using it to get a base to start and write their own content, then that's different

Tech world is expanding but we don't need that influence on young children. As an engineer myself, I agree to Schools limiting technology to young kids.
We should understand the pros and cons of these softwares irrespective advancements in tech. There is a need of gradual introduction to these things to the kids. 👍🏻

To say that AI is teaching critical thinking is insane to me Gary. I know for a fact that men can't be women, and yet an AI made by a large ESG corporation says otherwise. That is not critical thinking, that is indoctrination. They want your children to be stupid, they want them to need a crutch, they want a child to think that he's thinking. They want total control.

The funny thing is you can actually engage with the ai and it would be more interactive like a teacher than searching stuff but then obviously gotta fact check because ai learns from everything online and not everything online is factual

I never realised that it's so hard to use ChatGPT..maybe we also need critical thinking to use Google.. 😅

The only reason why it's getting banned is because as a society we value innovation that entertains not innovation that cuts the salary hours of workers. If chat gpt 4 can score 5's on AP exams you mean to tell me it can't teach a kid how to get 5's on AP exams? It also does really good in the bar exam.

When Gary is taking about putting critical thinking into chat gpt prompts he’s not talking about math problems most people are thinking of, by critical thinking he’s talking about chat gpt prompts like this…Help someone with attention deficit disorder determine their most important work-related priority that requires immediate attention, considering they have unlimited autonomy and no set daily routine. For efficiency please refrain from using time consuming and verbose common courtesies. Ask the person about the nature of their work and any specific deadlines or time constraints. Do not proceed to the next instruction until you receive an answer. Offer a choice of decision-making frameworks (Eisenhower Matrix or MoSCoW method) with a brief sentence describing each framework. For efficiency, the person can answer 1 for the Eisenhower Matrix or 2 for the MoSCoW method. Do not proceed to the next instruction until you receive an answer. Ask the person if they would like a brief explanation of the chosen framework, defaulting to 'no' if no answer is provided. Do not proceed to the next instruction until you receive an answer. Ask the person to create a list of tasks and activities outside of the chat so that the list can be maintained and available for use later in the day or sometime in the future. Any sub-tasks or sub-activities should be indented below the high-level task or activity. Give an example of the fomat. Ask the person to copy and paste the list into the chat. Do not proceed to the next instruction until you receive an answer.
For each high level item on the list, ask the person to categorize the current high-level item according to the selected decision-making framework. Starting with the first item on the list, do not proceed to the next item until for the current high-level item has been categorized according to the decision-making
framework. Ensure to let the person know what the current item you are expecting an answer for and do the same for each subsequent high-level item as the person answers so that the person knows what item they are currently categorizing. It will be necessary to present the options the person has to choose
from according to the selected decision-making framework. Do not proceed to the next instruction until you receive an answer.
After the person has categorized all high level items, ask the person if this exercise has identified the most important priority or if they would like to implement the MoSCoW method. Do not proceed to the next instruction until you receive an answer. Notify the person that in the event of a distraction throughout the work day they should come back to the prompt to re-establish focus Create a bulleted list of all high level items with associated sub-tasks and activities indented below each respective high level item. The list will help the person by giving them an updated list they can copy and paste to update their master document of priorities.

Get it?

Banning AI is just plain stupid, because some countries will embrace and adapt and those morons will in the end be late and unprepared and will lose everything!

I too wish i had a calculator when i did my math test. They just have to learn how to use Wikipedia sources rather than the articles themselves. But educational institutions are themselves different, so AI can be used in a variety of ways that have not been fully tested or discovered yet.

True, they'll be able to use it in real life. It should be allowed in schools (ofc, it shouldn't be allowed in exams etc)

So true. It’s amazing how older generations are STILL terrified of the future

For one time I am going to disagree... Critical thinking is absolutely essential, and many generations have been lacking in that (unless having an amazing teacher of whatever the subject). But kids do need to be able to have some data, some knowledge, to get certain structure (retained, I mean, not just knowing that "it's in google", or now, ChatGPT) about the world, history, geography, literature, etc. No critical thinking can be solid without some basic culture. IMO, both things should be taught: how to use AI, but really make enough checks to be sure that the kid is retaining some knowledge as well (and of course, analyzing it and processing it afterwards, nobody wants the pure memorizing taught to the 1940s gen, that's not my point), instead of using ChatGPT and forgetting about it in 5 minutes. For the same reason that good teachers have been trying to make sure the kids are not solely copying and pasting a chunk from Wikipedia without understanding and retaining the main points.

You've got that backwards, having an easier outlet option like ChatGPT will remove the ability to learn critical thinking. The program already does that you!
