Lake Malawi, Also Known As Lake Nyasa, Is A Large Freshwater Lake Situated Between The African Countries Of Malawi, Mozambique And Tanzania. It Is A Part Of African Great Lakes And Is The Southernmost Lake In The East African Rift System.
Covering Approximately 29,600 Square Kilometers In Total Surface Area, It Is The 9th Largest Lake In The World By Area And The 3rd Largest In Africa. The Lake Is Roughly 560 Km Long And 75 Km Wide At Its Widest Point, And Has An Total Water Volume Of 8400 Cubic Kilometer, Which Makes It The Fifth Largest Fresh Water Lake In The World By Water Volume.
Lake Malawi Is One Of The Main Rift Valley Lakes, Along With Lake Victoria And Lake Tanganyika, And Is Situated In A Valley Created By The East African Rift System, A Place Where The African Tectonic Plate Is Splitting Into Two Parts, Due To Diverging Plate Tectonics. Because Of This, Two New Tectonic Plates Are Forming ,which Are Somali Plate And The Nubian Plate.
Lake Malawi Has An Average Of Depth Of 264 Meters, With A Maximum Depth Of 706 Meters, Which Makes It The Second Deepest Lake In Africa After Lake Tanganyika.
Several Small And Big Rivers Drain Into Lake Malawi, Rivers Such As Ruhuhu, Songwe, Rukuru, Dwangwa, Bua, And Linthipe River Flow Into The Lake , While The Only River That Flows Out Of The Lake Is The Shire River, Which Is The Largest River In Malawi, And Flows Across A Length Of Roughly 400km Before Merging, Into The Zambezi River.
