Julius Nyerere from Tanzania was supposed to be on top of the list...He did so much for the continent(supported independence of many countries including South Africa, Kenya , Mozambique to mention the few. Also he was one of the key people who emphasized on African Unity. He started by Uniting his country Tanganyika with Zanzibar to form Tanzania, then went further to push for all East African countries to unite to form East African Community...His dream was to unite the entire african continent...What did Mandela do apart from staying in jail fighting for his people? He only fought for his country just like many others(Mugabe, Kaunda and the likes). He is not exceptional but the South Africans have done a good job in Promoting his name....They are so advanced in information systems than any other country in Africa( media etc) so it's easy to communicate/spread their views throughout the continent.
