The World Endurance Championship has REMOVED the LMP2 class from the 2024 season onward. Why did this happen? And what is the future of LMP2 racing in the WEC, will the class ever return?
These questions and so much more will be answered in this video, as I break down the collapse of the WEC LMP2 Class.

Don't worry, LMP2 fans. The LMP2 class will live on in regional endurance championships like the ELMS, the Asian LeMans series and IMSA.

In a few years, when Hypercar budgets spiral out of control, LMP2 will be back as the cost effective alternative it always was.

I just hope the next gen P2 regs fixes the problem of LMP2 being the "Use Oreca or you're trolling" championship.

If each track could host 50 cars, I still see possibility to retain LMP2 in WEC. 12 spots for LMP2 would still make interesting racing where Hypercar drivers need to show skill in fast overtaking of LMP2 cars not to waste time on track behind them. 2 classes for 2024 will certainly make live easier for Hypercars because of difference in speed between GT3 and Hypercars. IMHO 3 classes was and is the best option for multi-class racing. If the LMP2 would remain part of WEC I still think one could fill those 9 leaving spots with teams from ELMS and ALMS. (2nd Europol car, Cool Racing etc)

For me, this always was a matter of grid space rather than lack of entries. Guarenteed there are lots of ELMS/IMSA teams waiting to get a crack at WEC (assuming they have the budget of course). United autosport and Inter europol i think would have stayed if they kept the class for the full season, with the rest being filled up by ELMS/IMSA teams. Plenty of takers i'd imagine.

If Hypercar/GTP somehow descends in a financial crisis (wich i don't see happening... Yet), i see LMP2 being reactivated to "save" the series.

So no, this really isn't a downfall at all. Just less exposure.

They took up precious grid space and they are no public magnet because they are not associated with any car manufacturer like hypercar and gt3

LMP2 did not collapse. It's simply too cheap, too fast, too light. It doesn't fit in WEC where big brands are coming back with their Hypercars. These teams would easily be replaced by many others, see what this ELMS season will look like with unlocked LMP2 cars.

In the one hand, it's sad that those smaller, often private teams get kicked out of the WEC, on the other, the Hypercar Class has so many spots already taken up that I'm not really surprised, especially when the upcoming GT3 gets stronger as well. To play devil's advocate here, it streamlines the WEC lineup and makes it easier for new fans with only two categories (where we also have to differentiate between LMH, LMDh, with/without hybrid) instead of the four we got used to; and it makes ELMS stronger with LMP2 only there.

I dunno if anything has changed but i dont hear anyone mentioning that 2024 was set to be the final year of the current lmp2 regulations, and 2025 was supposed to be the first year of what imsa was calling next gen lmp2, with new regulations and new chassis from Dallara, Ligier, Multimatic and Oreca, which is what current lmdh teams are using for their own chassis but with their own bodies, for example Porsche is using a next gen Multimatic lmp2 chassis but with their own body applied on top of the next gen Multimatic lmp2 chassis, both BMW and Cadillac using Dallara chassis, both Acura and Alpine using next gen Oreca chassis and Lamborghini using a next gen Ligier chassis

Well that’s a little bit of a surprise that LMP2 will not be a part of the WEC anymore. But it’s good to know that they’re will be a place for them to race somewhere in the world of racing. 👍

Really going to miss lmp2 in the wec it was a fun class but what you mensioned about a next gen lmp2 category i hope it Will become something like the young driver programs like in f2 (for example Ferrari drive in hypercar with the 499p but also have a team in the lmp2 class with runner up drivers)

Can't be upset that manufacturers are here to support the WEC with Hypercar and LMGT3. Also excited that the LMP2 class now receives more power after having to be nerfed in order to slot in behind hypercar.

Dude you deserve so many more subscribers. One of the best racing channels by far.

It's a shame to lose the secondary class from WEC but I prefer accepting willing manufacturers to the top class, which compete for overall victory, to maintaining LMP2 in the series. If there's interest for hypercar then let them come.

We will have nine makes next year. Four LMH in Toyota, Peugeot, Ferrari and Isotta Fraschini, and five LMDh in Porsche, Cadillac, BMW, Lamborghini and Alpine. The sport of top level endurance prototype racing has only once featured this many different manufacturers at the top level - and when it did, it was considered the Golden Era. And it had no secondary class - something the modern WEC does feature, again flush with 9 manufacturers.

WEC is in a fantastic position and I can't wait for the 1812km of Qatar next march. Next season is going to be exciting.

I like LMP2. My first Le Mans was 2021. And LMP2 really shines that year, WRT car stop at the last lap, JOTA and other WRT battle it out until the final straight.

To think about it, Le Mans Daytona is a shadow of what LMP2 once was. Free engine choice but limited by power. semi-free chassis choice and there's 4 manufacturers to choose from. The difference is that the mild-hybrid and transmission became standardized.

LMP2's days in IMSA will be contingent on how much support LMDh gets from privateers and suppliers given it too has the very real possibility of GTP squeezing LMP2 out even with IMSA's significantly larger field size.

Well, once the hypercar lap time target was placed right onto the LMP2 average pace, it's not that surprising that the secondary class was pressured until eventually running out of space.

A shame, I wished to witness this class as I shifted from f1 to WEC. I got really bored from all these top manufacturers always holding the top spot. A shame that it will happen here too now.

WEC make a "cheaper series" called the Hypercar class which is still MUCH more expensive than the LMP2 class. Yet the LMP2's of 5 years ago were about just as fast.
