In Episode 05 of the Quest for Perfection on the 1997 BMW E36 M3 sedan, I finally get around to washing the car for the first time and taking nearly 1,000 miles of dirt and grime off the vehicle after driving it home from Jacksonville, FL, over a month ago. Now able to park the car in the garage, it can get clean and stay clean!
The first bath also afforded me an opportunity to more closely inspect the M3 and determine precisely what I purchased. The verdict is all good news: the car is as straight as an arrow and without a single ding or dent anywhere on the body. There are a few small rock chips on the front valance, and a couple in other places on the car, but nothing that cannot be resolved with some care and attention. There are also a couple areas where the paint needs some more diligent buffing from remove some scratches and haze, but nothing that cannot be easily remedied.
Having never been fully detailed, clay-bar'd, polished, and properly waxed, the car still has a long way to go to get it in a condition it should live the rest of its days. We're tasked with undoing 20 years of unintentional neglect in certain places. Prior owners cared for the car meticulously, but only to do the extent they knew how. As a result, many of the fine detailing and preservation efforts I perform are usually beyond the scope of most (but not all) prior owners when I acquire a new vehicle. Resurrecting these cars and bringing back to as-good-as-humanly-possible is part of the fun. Glad you're also part of the journey.
