Sony Removes One of PS5’s Coolest Features

Update 24.07-10.20.00 is a relatively small patch, and its main purpose is to improve Activities. I saw quite a few players asking around if the update “fixed” the Resume Activity feature for anyone. Upon booting up my console, I noticed that the language on the Activity Cards changed, and there was no longer an option to “resume” any Activities. Sony has changed the wording on the cards to “Play Game.”

Players could previously jump straight into the relevant portion of a game via the Activity Cards. Now, they can only cold boot into the main menu. I wanted to be sure that I wasn’t the only one experiencing this, so I spent some time looking this up. Folks across Reddit and ResetEra have confirmed the change, and YouTuber Mystic has put out a pretty informative video that confirms my suspicions.

Why the PS5 Has no Disc Drive

PS5 is now 78% digital vs 75% digital last year.

For the Jan-Aug period, for all titles with both physical and digital sales tracking, 53% of Switch software sales were done digitally compared to 52% in the same period last year.

91% of XBS software was done digitally this year vs 90% last year.

We Need more $50 Games!

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 team Sandfall Interactive has responded to concerns its debut RPG may come with a catch or some sort of drawback since it's not charging $70 for the game. Taking to X (or Twitter), the studio confirmed the recently listed $50 price point is indeed correct and addressed the suggestion it'll be a short experience since the developer isn't charging full price.

It said: "To be clear: we poured all of our hearts and souls into this game. When you play Expedition 33, you can expect 30+ hours of main game, and [just] as much side content for our completionist Expeditioners." Suggesting you can get up to 60 hours of playtime out of Expedition 33, it continued: "Pricing that you see from your local retailers is accurate, and we can’t wait for you to get your hands on the game." The turn-based RPG is now slated to arrive in Spring 2025.

To me only physical games are worth full price or anything close to full price. Digital games should be no more than 30 bucks.

All of my games are physical discs. I think Sony is bloating the numbers of digital games to justify removing the disc drive. They're probably counting the free PS+ game downloads.

People forget that many people still only have PS5, or any other PS, as their only DVD/Blu-Ray player, too.

It's crazy to think that they was charging us $40 to $50 for games that were complete and now they're charging us $60, $70 to even $130 for games that are not even completed.. and here's the kicker you don't even own the digital game you just on the license and if the license expires for the game you're out of $60 $70 or even $130!

There are lies, damned lies, and then their's statistics. I don't believe for one second that Sony trying to phase out disx drives is in response to market trends - they're trying to force those trends by convincing everyone that they're already true (that the majority of console gamers don't buy physical) to justify dropping physical completely.

Well maybe that's just the way the industry is heading and that there's nothing any of us can do about it, but when that day comes I'll gladly drop console gaming without any regret. It's already an expensive enough hobby without Sony trying to pry my own games out of my hands.

I think for me and other people the answer is really simple. If the PS5 Pro costs 700 dollars and it doesn't have a disc drive we won't buy it. As someone else said around here, the day physical games stop existing, we'll drop console gaming.

I decided to buy my PS5 disc version when Sony made the announcement of the Pro not having a disc.

My question about the data related to physical game purchase numbers compared to digital purchases is whether or not they are excluding sales numbers for games that don’t get a physical release. Because the data would be skewed in favor of digital purchases by those sales numbers.

A better comparison is the physical vs digital sales only for games that get both releases.

I'm gonna be pissed off if they get rid of disc drives, I have around 100 PS4 discs and only about 4 or 5 digital games that I got for free. I have around 65 ps5 discs to, and only 1 or 2 digital games again I got free. If they go all digital I won't be going back to them again.
I like to own the game for when the server disappears or game is discontinued in the digital store.

I bought the disc game console because it is my blu ray DVD player. I also do get games with a disc so I do not have to use up more of space available on my ps5.

I'd be using disc drive to play my ps4 games regardless of whether or not I buy ps5 games on disc

people say sony will make more money if they're the only source of games, but you have to take into account people that simply don't buy games until they're on sale. You think those people will magically start buying games full price? If anything I'd assume the company would lose money as they would ultimately have less game sales, and not just a small percentage that gets cancelled out by full price game sales.

The reason I bought the PS5 Slim with the Blu-ray drive is to watch movies. I used my PS3 for that but the drive died. It's cheaper to use my PS5 for Blu-ray movies than to buy a Blu-ray player.

No no no, I bet Sony is inflating the digital sales claim! because remember Playstation plus or premium gives you and let's you play games "digitally" and they are including that in there digital sales survey claim!

The resume activity feature was bugging out trophies so personally I'm glad to see it go.

Sony forgets that people like to go back and play the ps4 games thay have OR don't want to spend more money on getting the ps5 digital version of the game thay already own on a physical disk, Sony can't track the number of players who play hard copy over digital and you can't forget about the people who who is it just for movies thay bought in stores wich are on disc that's why the the desk version of the Ps5 was so popular

The take on digital game purchase doesn't take into account the people that buy the disc console to grandfather in their disc games in order to vouch for free ps5 digital upgrades, which could account for the uptick in digital games.

noticed that some of my PS plus monthly games and general PS plus games that I have hundreds of hours in are now locked until I pay for them and others no option to buy them. Sony has went full on insane.

Many of use have a library of disc games we continue to return to. So even if we aren’t spending a lot on new discs, losing access to play our pre owned games would make us question our interest in things like one line across through Plus subscription.

I made a physical backlog for cheap, now Sony has been releasing on ps premium. So I just play it on premium. But still love to collect physical. Also nice to have the option to play Blu-ray, which is better quality.
