Jabulani the elephant and his curious green trunk 🌿

Показать описание
Adine captured Jabulani the elephant bull out in the reserve with Carer, Shepherd and says, “I noticed that when the elephants feed on the large fruited bushwillow leaves – one of the combretum species, which have big hairy green leaves, they not only make the elephants’ trunks green, they also seem to tickle the trunk.
“It seems that the hair on the leaves may cause a tingling effect and after a while the elephants try to get rid of whatever is inside their trunks, so they will step on their trunk and suck in the residue air. Their trunks go into a silly wiggle and they will swing their trunks about and blow hard so that you can see green bits and bobs flying into the air.
“Jabulani does this and blows it over his eye, and then with his trunk he wipes the eye or he will blow it over his head and sometimes even blow it out onto us.
“The combretum’s leaves are turning colour fast now — from the city grass green colour it turns an autumn yellow. We are lucky if the leaves stay on longer, as it stretches the leaves to better feed the elephants. But I think we will see a cold winter where the leaves will fall off sooner.
“The elephants are also starting to eat more bark now. The same Combretum species, they break and feed on the branch while rolling it between their palate and tongue, while they chew and swallow the bark. We have lots of these combretum species in the Reserve and also cut these branches to add as supplements for the elephants in their homestead area.”
