F1 24 - PS5 Pro Hands-On - Ray Tracing and PSSR Upgrades Tested

At Sony's PS5 Pro hands-on event, Codemasters' F1 24 deeply impressed us with its range of visual upgrades. After the event, we had the opportunity to visit the developers and capture the PS5 Pro version of the game running on development hardware. With an enhanced RT-heavy quality mode and an impressive 120FPS performance alternative, and a 'resolution' mode designed for 8K displays, F1 24 is one of the most robust, fully featured PS5 Pro upgrades we've seen yet.

Thanks for visiting us, it was a pleasure to finally have DF in the studio 😊

People who think the base PS5's road reflections are better are the sorts of people who set their TVs to "Vibrant" mode because they think oversaturated colors are better.

(probably mounting their TV above the fireplace too)

More interested what benefits the Pro with bring to GT7 in VR. 90 or 120 FPS with no reprojection would be awesome.

I don't think I would notice the difference without doing a side by side comparison. Still it's a nice bonus and it looks more real.

turning on RT on my 4070 cuts my fps in half, really surprised to see PS5 Pro getting 3 of the 4 RT features. Don’t blame them for not turning on RT shadows since it’s the least noticeable RT feature versus the other 3 RT effects

14:25 Why do we have VRR at all if people are just going to lock an 80fps game to 60fps?
PS5 Pro quality mode needs an unlocked framerate option.

0:42 "there's a a new 8K resolution mode on PS5 Pro, unlocking once a compatible display is attached"

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

As a cinematographer, I believe lighting is incredibly important. It’s a key tool in creating mood and tone. If the goal is to normalize tech that allows for both physically accurate light depiction as well as an easier workload for developers when it comes to lighting environments then I say let’s do it. There are plenty of poor examples of RT that don’t fully utilize everything it offers, or examples like this where it is difficult to really see the results because it’s sunny, high speed racing. There are also some incredible example of full path-tracing that really show just how amazing the tech will be. Just need to get the hardware up to a point where it is more accessible. Which is what they’re trying to do. Anyone who wants to just write off RT is fine, but you’re advocating for stagnation. Between RT, Lumen, and Megalights, I can’t wait to see what creatives do.

I don't see the point in spending 800€ for that ...

"opaque materials like glass"

That is a somewhat contradictory statement. 😊

As long as rain drops don't bounce of the car itself, I wouldn't worry much about Ray Tracing and other stuff around it.

I normally don't like formula 1 racing on console, but I am picking this one up. It just looks so good. They did a great job.

00:43 man its 2024 and every single game still uses this ancient rain effect, no depth, nothing, just a flat texture over the screen, or few feet around the player.

The F1 games may come out annually like Madden or Fifa, but they always try to enhance the tech every year and the games are extremely well-optimized. You don't need a really powerful PC to use all these ray tracing effects and get good performance.

Got mine yesterday. What I’ve noticed with some games, is games look better with the 120hz mode off in the ps5 settings.
Yeah I know, obviously.

But what I mean is, I’ve been playing f1 24 in quality mode. So it’s 4k 60 with ray tracing and all the bells and whistles. But while playing it, I thought why does this not look as sharp as when i played it on my base ps5.

So I went into the actual console settings, and turned 120hz from auto to off. Went back on f1 24. My god, killer difference. So so sharp!

It seems even in quality mode with the 120hz on in the console settings, it still ups the frame rate and lowers resolution. Even when I’ve chosen quality mode. Doesn’t make sense.

Theres a difference with the reflections, yes, but for me the difference isnt enough for me to care. The game is fast paced, I wont even notice the difference during gameplay lol. That pretty much sums up ray tracing as a whole for me… its less noticeable in action and fast paced titles. As far as resolutions go… i game on 2 55inch tv’s a few feet from couches… everything after 1440p looks the same to me. Ill be more interested in this “pro” console if they can somehow give us more 120fps options, or at least unlocked fps with vrr options. Other than that im cool on the base consoles for now

To be honest, i dont give a shyte about ray tracing in a lot of games. I just never notice in active gameplay. I rather have a higher resolution or nicer effects that impact the feel and gameplay.
