Today I stumbled across a Porsche Cayman S at a Copart auction that looked to be in really good shape but it was making a mysterious ticking or knocking noise. Do you think this would be worth bidding on?

If you adjust the stereo volume to max, that should eliminate the ticking noise.

That could be a lifter not pumping up, broken bearing on a rocker, but it is timing and not a rod not. Rod knocks are louder and deeper, your noise is a tick not a bang, and how I absolutely know it's not a rod knock is it's not ticking fast enough.camshafts spin at half the speed as crankshafts, your tick is slower timed with a camshaft not a crankshaft. My guess is a collapsed lifter that won't pump up. There is a tiny chance it could be a exhaust leak between your cylinder head and exhaust manifold rare but I have seen them and they also can sound like that.

That's the rear coupler siphon. On the old Carerras they were notorious for having the bearings slip through into the diffuser rod. It's a complex but not expensive job, as long as you're not paying for the time. Just get it on a ramp, disconnect the three point lead under the centre axle ball and strip back the mid carriage plating. Then replace the bearing housing and stick on a new rubber boot around the bearings. Job done.

Edit: Seems to be getting a bit of traction in the comments (haha, a car joke, get it?). Leave a comment if this helped you fix your Carerra! Don't forget to say if it was the forward dyno or the centre coupling that had the issue!

Years ago I had a BMW 318 the old boxy shape, I think it was E19, and the cam belt split. A local scrap yard sold me an engine and took the old one out and put the new/used engine in it. I got it back and it had that ticking noise and I was like "just great" the noise was driving me up the wall. I took it to a main dealer garage and spoke to someone there, I've no idea of his role there, but he said "don't bring it here this lot will be messing about with it for days". He gave me the number of a small garage about 20 miles away. The mechanic put in his computer changed the spark plugs and it never made the sound again. £30 is all he charged I was like the happiest person ever.

Sorry, English is not my native language, but I'll try to explain. The noise you're hearing is most likely coming from a valve, which shouldn't be a major issue. The valve in question is self-adjusting (hydraulic lifters) and operates based on oil pressure. When the engine is not used for an extended period, such as during winter (for several months), the valve can become clogged due to the absence of oil. To resolve this, start the engine and let it run for a minute or two, then turn it off. Wait for about half an hour and restart the engine. I have successfully used this method with my 911 (997) as well.

Once your hear a rod knock you'll never miss one again. And this is NOT a rod knock. The thump is always the clue.

Happened with my truck when she sat for 6 months. Oil level was fine, it was just all sitting at the bottom of the pan until it worked into the engine. Let her warm up at idle for a bit, definitely don't Rev a dry engine

When I was a kid, my dad's truck sounded like that and I thought it was awesome. He told me it was the sound of a custom 'hotrod' exhaust... the engine then proceeded to blow up😂

I love how your like I’m not sure if it’s a lifter tick or it’s knocking. Better rev it. Probably cold. Hasn’t been started in god knows how long didn’t check oil level. Winning
