Lee Mack worked as an entertainer at Pontins (Family) Holiday Camps. Because of the blue colour jackets, the staff & entertainers were referred to as Bluecoats. The rival holiday camps (Butlins) had their entertainment staff wear red jackets and are known as Redcoats!
And a smaller group of holiday camps (Warners' Leisure) became Greencoats...

Martin Clunes - the bloke in the middle - top chap, national treasure, kind, gentle, LOVES animals, funny as a comedic actor/excellent as a serious actor, does wonderful travel programmes visiting isolated and remote places where the people who do not get many “tourists” all love him, all in all a 100% decent human being ❤️❤️

I can't think of a more proud moment than making 2 comedy legends break like this.
Beautiful.

You should watch 'Would I Lie to You' to see more of Lee Mack. He is famous for his lighting fast wit. Very funny. WILTY is a good show for reactions where guest star, Bob Mortimer's, compilations have become very popular.

the "blue coat" reference is about 1 of the UK's national holiday-camp franchises called "Pontins". The most famous camps belonged to "Butlins", who had the famous "red coats"

Martin Clunes(middle guy) is fantastic in "Doc Martin" - He plays a surgeon who has become nauseous at the sight of blood so goes to work as a local GP in a small village on the Cornish coast. Oh, and he makes Dr House look mild mannered and friendly!

Pontins and Butlins are Holiday Camps - loads of little chalets (very shed reminiscent) and amusements. The entertainment staff wear Blue jackets at Pontins and Red jackets at Butlins. Huge in the 1950's & 60's somewhat run down by the '70's & 80's. Had a bit of resurgence in the 2000's. A ton of tv entertainers started in the holiday camps. Check out Hi-Di-Hi, which was an 80's tv programme set in the camps heydays but absolutely taking the mick - 'HI-DI-Hi Campers!'

Blue coats are the entertainment and guest support team at holiday camps such as Butlin's or Pontin's (you could look it up). Martin Clunes is a comedian, actor and presenter. He rose to fame in the 90s in the sitcom 'Men Behaving Badly'. Thanks for digging out the clip, so funny.

A bluecoat is someone who works at the Pontins chain of holiday parks. They wear a blue coat to identify them to holidaymakers. There is another chain called Butlins and their staff are called Redcoats. Butlins were the more famous of the two.

Martin Clunes in the middle has the best laugh on British television, you can see how much he is enjoying this story. He has done some good documentaries as well as comedy sitcoms shows, a good actor.

A bluecoat, which you wondered about at the start of this, is a holiday camp entertainer. At the famous British camps Butlins they wore red jackets and were known as redcoats, and at the less famous camp Lee Mack obviously worked at they had bluecoats. So that's what he was referring to. It's another Brit thing. So glad you liked the tea. You two are such fun to watch.

Frontline staff at competing holiday camps adopted coloured coats to differentiate themselves. Butlins' staff were called Redcoats, Pontins' were Bluecoats, and Warner's were Greencoats; duties ranged from adult entertainer or children's entertainer to stewarding.

Martin Clunes (sitting in the middle) is another connection that wifey might appreciate; he headlined the comedy series 'Doc Martin' that also featured Katherine Parkinson from 'The IT Crowd'.

"Blue Coats" are the entertainment staff at Pontins, a franchise of holiday camps up and down the UK, whose uniforms had distinctive blue blazers.
Similary, to Butlins' Red Coats. The creators of _Dads Army_ were both Red Coats in their youth, and based another long-running sit-com on the idea- _Hi-de-hi, _ set in a fictitious Maplin's holiday camp with yellow coats.

A bluecoat is an entertainer at a ‘holiday camp’, more famous are the red coats at Butlins holiday camps - they’re still a thing but not nearly as big as they used to be when more people took their vacations in the UK

Entertainment staff at Pontin’s Holiday Camp are known as Bluecoats (because of their uniforms) and entertainment staff at Butlin’s Holiday Camp are known as Redcoats. There was a fictional holiday camp called Maplin’s from the sitcom “Hi-de-hi” whose characters wore Yellowcoats.
