Did You Know In BLACK SWAN…

The ending of the film can be taken in two different directions, and Natalie Portman was worried about this. While they were applying the blood to the stab wound on Natalie, she told Aronofsky that she was worried that the placement of the blood would make people think it was a period. He said that he did this intentionally to symbolize her becoming a woman. Because of this, Natalie doesn’t think that Nina dies at the end. She sees it more as Nina having to kill the little girl in order to mature.

Weird how the audience thought all the blood was part of the show

"Ah, yes, human person girl, I also bleed monthly from my abdomen! Totally normal human person bodily functions!" -the director, probably

Her character actually did kill herself though...At the end she stabs herself with glass because she became so consumed with the role that she literally became it.
The entire movie is them saying she's too innocent to play the role and should stick to the White Swan. As a result, she goes through drastic measures to be the Black Swan.
The ending literally symbolizes her letting go of her innocence and how greed and/or obsession can corrupt the most purest of hearts. In other words, she killed her own innocence.

My belly button bleeds too, glad to know this is common. I thought I was a freak

I'm gonna go ahead and call cap on this one on account of how Natalie Portman is an extremely intelligent woman, and no reasonable person would think the blood came from a period, especially since the scene before it had her pulling glass out of her stomach.

I first got my period at 11 years old I ain't was no woman at that age. My mom got hers at 9. A period doesn't make someone instantly mature they're still little girls...

Holy shit! Apparently, I've been menstruating wrong.

That movie is not leading up to a mere 'little girl loses innocence and becomes an adult ' story. That movie is beyond mental and if it's a sense if loss of innocence then it's gotta be the second loss of innocence of being an adult that not all adults experience.

I’ve always preferred thinking she passes at the end. The way she kinda just stares blankly at the ceiling and the screen turns into light meaning she “saw the light”

i kinda see it as her dying at the end, i think it’s more beautiful and brings more of a message

Because us women have our periods out of our bellybuttons.

This doesn't seem right. I've never met Natalie Portman, but she seems smarter than someone who'd think ones menstrual flow would show up on the abdomen. If a ballerina's flow started on stage, especially in a tight tutu, it would more likely be visible on the crotch area of the tutu and slightly towards the back center where her labia and butt cheeks meet.

As someone who hasn't seen this movie, what the fuck?

No one in the comments understanding symbolism lmao, obviously they were not going to place the blood lower. Firstly, even though that would more accurately represent a period, it would not create such an interesting cinematographic image, secondly it had to stay ambigious, so there's not one explanation of the ending. Has little to do with men (or Natalie Portman) not knowing anything about periods.

Did you know black swan was heavily inspired off the movie Perfect Blue? Everyone knows this, I need an excuse to promote my favorite movie

As a woman, I can confirm that our periods do in fact come from the middle of our stomachs.

This scene where she is crying and applying the mascara is the Oscar winner for me.

I always thought that the blood was a symbolism of her detaching herself from her mother, like the cutting of an umbilical cord. But idk.
