2 Minute Moto - What Is A Crossplane Crank?

You might have heard of crossplane cranks, or maybe even heard the nice sounds they make, but why is a crossplane so special. Lemmy explains the unique construction and properties of the crossplane crank, as well as his reasoning behind his critique of a certain manufacturer’s use of the crossplane concept. Next time you’re talking engines, you’ll be in the know as far as crossplanes are concerned.

The fact that the lesson starts at 0:32 and stops at 2:32 makes me wanna hug you Lemmy.

Cool. now do Radial(Harley and SnS) vs Offset(Everyone else) VTwins.
There's a big difference between the way Harley+S&S make Vtwin engines, and the way that Honda indian Yamaha, ect ect make VTwins. World needs to know Lem!

I've always thought Yamaha's point about the triple being a crossplane design is a point well taken. The triple crank is a crossplane par excellence, the throws being in 3 planes not just 2. This has the advantage of only one piston being stopped at any given moment; the other two are in motion smoothing out the inertial torque flow.

1:04 I really don't understand how a twin can have it's crank pins 90 degrees apart. 360/2=180. Or have I completely misunderstood this?

Clean and concise. I wondered WTF Yamaha meant by crossplane triple. I envisioned 90 degree offsets, but that just wouldn't sound right.

What's a crossplane crank? It's a crank that has crankpins that are not co-planar. That's it. Even if they are 1° off, it's a cross-plane.

Parallel twins with 270 crank are cross plain, as with L twins if memory serves me right. 360 twins are more iconic to my ears.

Is the Yamaha cp3 engine spaced at 120° like a normal triple, or at 90° like the cp2 and cp4 engines?

This videos could be 30 minutes long, and i'd still be glued to the screen. Don't know if you can talk for 30 minutes about just Crossplane cranks though....

I have a 2006 Honda Rebel 250 in the shop for a basic carb rebuild, and I was just thinking it’d be neat to have a 270° crank on it in place of the stock 360° one. How feasible is this, and what kind of money? I’m also not totally opposed to doing some wrenching myself, but it will be an undertaking.

I also have a 2017 Ninja 300 that I am less willing to modify in this way, at least on my own.

Please, let me know if there is precedent for this, as I am deadly curious.
