The Dragonuv, the Hind and the BMP are peak Cold War Soviet aesthetics. Ahead of their time, perfect marriage of form and functions and just look so cool.

I don't know why, but the SVD just looks so elegant. It's one of those aesthetic guns that you can't point out what detail makes it look good, it just does.

Yeah Dragunov kinda spoke about this rifle once, saying that he would've made it muchmore accurate but the leadership gave him some prettystrict limitations on weight, while the accuracy as it was perfectly satisfied the intended role. Great video.

The PSO-1 scope also a scope designed in the late 50's has a integrated IR detector on the top which is insane to me

The biggest problem of SVD it is that people use typical MG round. The best result with sniper rounds 7N1, 7N14 and 7N37.

Having shot one of these recently I can say it’s got the most savage recoil I have ever experienced from a gun. The wooden stock has no padding at all, and the first shot could have broken my clavicle if it had been a touch higher. I tucked it lower into my pectoral and still did not enjoy the experience in the slightest. For a semi auto the grouping was pretty poor, around 4 inches at 100 yards, some of that was down to me I guess, I felt like I had too much tension in anticipation of the stupidly harsh recoil. Compare to the M40 I shot after which with no gas system and a larger cartridge was much less vicious in terms of recoil and printed cloverleaf groups at 100 yards.

I bought a dragunov tiger in 1994. As he said it's too light weight to shoot tight groups but it's an excellent hunting grade deer rifle.

QOTD, EBR or SVD: SVD, I really like the sight picture of the PSO-1 scope that it comes equipped with

SVD, without hesitation. We were issued M14s bedded into McMillans as DMRs, but they ended up spending more time bouncing around in the back of Humvees with cases of bottled water and rolls of Cope Long Cut because we couldn't keep them running. Based on my experience, I'd take any rifle over an M14.

Speaking from Italy here, yes you can buy Zastava here but is also very easy to get a TIGR (civilian version of the SVD) in both calibers 7.62x54R and .308 WIN.
A Russian TIGR goes from 1600€ (bare minimum box + rifle + 1 mag) to around 2600€ (wooden box + rifle in SVDS configuration + NPZ 3-9x scope with matched serial number).

QOTD: definitely take the SVD solely because I’m in love with the dovetail PSO-1

A few genuine Russian SVD's were available from a Montreal gun store in 1988, Checkmate Sports rings a bell but I am not 100% on that. Came in a velvet lined wood box with 4 mags, bayo, mag pouch, cleaning kit, PSO scope, the full deal. Price was $2000.00. Very expensive rifle in 1988 but also quite rare. In around 1995 they were prohibited with all AK variants. Very surprised you are able to own and shoot one since they have been prohibited in Canada for close to 30 years.
