Are China's investments benefitting Pakistanis or hurting them? | Counting the Cost

China has invested billions of dollars on building infrastructure projects in Pakistan over the past decade. It is the nation's largest creditor.

But expanding Beijing's economic influence in developing nations comes with security risks.

As elsewhere in Asia and Africa, Chinese workers are increasingly coming under attack in Pakistan.

Western nations accuse Beijing of trapping countries in debt they can't afford to repay.

The Chinese Prime Minister reiterated his nation's pledge to boost a multibillion-dollar economic corridor with Pakistan during a visit to the nation last week.

But does the relationship benefit China more than Pakistan or is it a win-win for both?

Fintan Monaghan reports.

I don't understand why Indian and Pakistani diplomats talk in English instead of our language, like Chinese diplomats talk in their own language🤔😂

You are not of any side of them, the only thing you better to do is shutting up, and enjoy your own life. Imagine the situation that two people are in a relationship, and someone else is discussing and giving suggestions 24 hours a day 7 days a week. How do you feel? :)

During Cold War, Pakistan was just a hot bed to recruit Mercenaries and Extremist militants to fight Soviet Union
Atleast with the Chinese investments would bring useful productivity to the country and stabilise the region

We are stuck in a brutal circle the military handpicking corrupt politicians, the politicians then making deals with the Chinese, and later we the Public are stuck in the vicious debt trap.

Why is Pakistan, presently, in such a dire state ?
1. Agrarian Feudalism
2 Oversized / political role of the Army
3 Dual citizenship which means dual loyalties
4. Extreme religious inclination
5 Anti India / Anti Hindu mindset
6. Over reliance on foreign powers like the USA and, now China
7 Dominance of Punjab over other regions of Pakistan.

As a British Pakistani whos family is very well connected to Pakistan I can say if it wasn’t for China there wouldn’t be a Pakistan right now every single development in Pakistan is because of China the only reason the country hasn’t ceased to exist is because of Chinese money and help

To be honest China focuses on much of these strategy oriented investments not very thoughtful on what matters the most for the region. I personally think it should came from covering bottom type of initiatives rather than these flex music do P.R stunts, nor does it in a way that makes domestic Chinese population think:”ahh one of these things again, leeching our population for other country.” How does that make Pakistanis felt? Are they supposed to be the bad one receiving gifts?

No brains, all political shows.

If China truly cares about Pakistan first build a good river system or perhaps non destructive river flowing for irrigation, first cover the bottom, very bottom is food safety, then next worry about climates, you can have house but one storm swept their house away how’s that helping? How’s the whole co2 emission with both China and USA? Also…the big oil..?😂 Middle East?

Look look, I rain stormed your house now needed to gift you something, do some P.R for me.(everybody take hits here, climate see no borders)

I often believe a phrase if you wanted to help someone you gave them 50k dollars, if you gave them 20 dollars you just wanted to shoo them away.

Look, be real, free money life style needs at least 8k usd a year in these poor regions and 40k in developed nations, with mass population and high population growth it can barely survive, that means have shelter, secured food, transportation system to get to work and a bright future. With 8k they can buy clothes and washing machine, afford better moped and perhaps save up for future tuition, who’s gonna do that for 100million population?

We haven't seen any trade at Gawader. Pakistan has to reimburse this amount. China has opened several other routes like from Afghanistan and Iran. The things are not going well.

USA and other countries have also controlled some countries with debt. I am not even sure if it can be stated it is countries controlling, but companies that know no borders. Hopefully the development will not ruin natural resources and bring a better life for the Pakistan people.

In my india, we can't even protest against our dictator Modi without being labeled anti-national and facing the threat of bulldozers demolishing our homes. Sadly, my India is no longer a democracy. Sometimes, I wish I had never been born here.
