The Residential School with Jimmy and I (ruins and History)

Показать описание
The Brandon Indian Residential School operated at this site north of the City of Brandon, in the Rural Municipality of Cornwallis, from May 1895 to June 1972. The abandoned building remained here until August 2000 when it was demolished. There is also a graveyard on site where some students who died while in residence were buried.

These children were taken from their homes and lost their native language and spirituality. They were sent into town to work for wealthy families for profit of the school.
Up to 90% of the children were physically and emotionally abused and up to 60% were sexually abused.
Many children were forbidden to go home for holidays ,but instead sent to foster homes to learn a "normal ,loving way of life".

Imagine, the site and those bricks, windows and materials. They represent the beautiful and precious touches, spirits and biographies of lovely strong and resilient indigenous children. The broken windows tell the story of many nights and days where a child may have looked through, the bricks that may have the imprint of a child's hand. I am not indigenous but so fascinated by the life of those beautiful children who have endured a life full of stories, pain and creativity in a very oppressive environment. We will never forget Residential School system and its destructive impact on indigenous people. We are stronger and we will rebuild.

That was very interesting....a little part of history....a sad time. Unbelievable how people, at the time, thought they were doing the right thing. Thanks for sharing this.

My mother and Uncles went to a school like that in Alberta, and she told me a few stories about what it was like.I took a brick and a tin I found and left an offering of tobacco for it.They are going to trash it all so its nice to keep a little part of it to remember.I remember it when it was still standing and was scared of it then.
When my sisters and I were little we used to get teased so much for being native so going there was really special with my son.So beautiful :)

so sad but a beautiful place. love the stream sounds so soothing. love the sound of the bugs. They proably would mind you taking stuff but looks like there is plenty. So very sad the picture of the buildings are wonderful, terrible they were such horrible places. The pic of the children is so beautiful they were so tiny. Breaks your heart. We had places like that here I am sure. There was an orphanage close to where we live it was creepy. They remodeled it into a house. Thank you for sharing.

My Grandmother never admitted to being native American, which I think is very sad, but I think its because it was a bad thing once upon a time. You should always be proud of whatever your heritage is. I consider myself American, but I am also English, Irish, German and Indian. In other words Heinz 57 a little of this and a little of that which is what most Americans now are. There was no reason to not take a little something. Hugs : )
