Didn’t expect us light novel fan to be a dying breed

As somebody who has read a lot of LNs, and just likes reading in general... the issue I have with Light Novels is that nowadays, Light Novels are locked into 1 of 2 genres, either High School Romance or Fantasy (usually isekai), and sometimes sci-fi, but more rarely.

Seriously, go on bookwalker, and count the first 100, see how many of them don't fall into one of those categories. And they never do anything standout with those categories either, we pretty much never get a Haruhi or Spice and Wolf anymore. I've taken a break from reading them this year cause I realized anime and manga are just more interesting.

I think people play A LOT more japanese video games, they just don't think of them as japanese media

I feel like most of these comments don't know that most animes and even mangas are adapted from light novels without light novels you wouldn't get some of your favorite series

When you watch an anime and switch to the light novel you can expect at least a good 25% extra content. Not just because plot elements are cut, but because a lot of animation is too cheap to really convey the thoughts and emotions that are just plainly spelled out in the light novel or drawn in high quality in the manga. That goes for fight scenes too.

All the biggest stories of the 2010's Light Novel Boom ended, and it's just a pain to start over again for another 2000 chapter, 10 year long series (or sries' that have been on hiatus for multiple years) so now we just wait til it gets good enough for an adaptation to avoid George R.R. Martin syndrome. At least that's how I figure it went down.

Light novels don't update that much compared to everything else ... Half a year waiting to fix a cliffhanger only to end on another cliffhanger. And then i just go to mangas instead

I do not need to rise for i have already risen by my sheer superiority as a novel reader

I used to read a bunch when I was younger, especially light novels after finding out they existed, but after I started college and work I barely had any time for reading sadly

Maybe I’m too spoiled by some books I’ve read in the past, but I find the quality of light novel translation to be subpar more often than not; so if you’re not able to read in Japanese, it feels like a chore to read. In manga I can forgive bad translations because a lot can still be appreciated from the visuals, but when you read a book, all you have is words, so the quality of the translation matters a lot more.

My preferred method of actually LEARNING Japanese are non-anime TV shows. The dialogue just tends to be more comprehensible and it’s more natural speech than a lot of anime. That’s not to say there aren’t anime with natural speech, but you really have to be careful when picking them.

I read webnovels, Lightnovels and enjoy them far more than anime because i like to imagine the entire story through the lens of my imagination.

Its because one of the best ways to learn how to speak a language is exposure and anime tends to have that in abundance

The keyword is *preferred* if there is an anime that has completely conveyed the story of an LN without any issues. I would definitely choose the anime. I for one read LNs simply because there isn't an anime for it yet, but am halted because I can't speak/read Japanese and there isn't an English translation yet, looking at you "Makeine" vol 2+

LN and regular novels in general are my fav way to consume fiction. If an anime im getting into had a LN counterpart or as a source material, that’d always be my preferred way to get into the franchise.

Plus my fav piece of media ever is the Toaru series from kamachi and his way of writing just makes the novels and esp the fights so fun and thrilling to read, yet there are so many emotional scenes.

But altho im surprised at music being above LN 😭W for video games tho visual novels are fantastic
