How do the Hawks build around Trae Young & Dejounte Murray?

Показать описание
While we have yet to see Trae Young and Dejounte Murray play together in a real nba game, the preseason has been reasonably promising. The Hawks were in desperate need of an additional shot creator and ball handler and got exactly that with Murray.
The Hawks had the second highest offensive rating in the league in the 2021-2022 season and the 26th ranked defensive rating. Capela took a step back and the team was consistently exploited at the perimeter.
Murray is no messiah, i’m not certain he can ever be anything close to the second best player on a championship team. But he’s an effective point of attack defender who can take a good bit of the ball handling off of Trae’s plate. If Murray’s addition, along with the development of some other young guys, can take this team to a middle of the pack defense while maintaining the top 5 offense then maybe this team can be for real. But Atlanta’s young talent is complicated. I mean they have massive potential, but when i don’t know if it’s a slam dunk to say that any of Hunter, Okongwu, or Collins are going to be all stars in this league. Let’s talk about them.
DeAndre Hunter’s ceiling Is exactly what this team needs. A 6’8” forward with a 7’2” wingspan who can guard multiple positions and knock down spot up 3’s is a good player don’t get me wrong. But Hunter has been massively inconsistent in his first three seasons. Not only has he been plagued with injuries, (only playing in 133 games of 246 possible games), but his injuries have come in a way that he keeps having to stop and go. I actually and pretty bullish on Hunter but he has to stay healthy. This is a contract year for him so if he’s ever going to show us something now is the time. If we get to January and the Hawks are middling, doing be surprised if you see Hunter in trade talks.
John Collins is somebody I was wrong about. I need to repent. As a Blazers fan I heard rumors leading up to the draft that Portland was considering trading the 7th overall pick for Collins and I was so mad at the thought. How stupid could we be? But I watched a couple of highlight tapes and holy shit I kind of love this guy. Collins is a high flying freak athlete with floor spacing potential. He has been sort of underutilized this far in the Trae Young era. There’s not a lot of offense that is run through the guy and the fit next to Capela is questionable. However I actually think the Okongwu fit is incredible. Collins isn’t an excellent defender but he does have size, which Okongwu lacks. On offense they both dominate the low post and are major lob threats in a offensive with Young and Murray in the backcourt. Okongwu’s development I think will benefit Collins more than any other Hawks player. But if Capela remains the starting center I’d expect another confusing role for the talented young Collins.
Onyeka Onkongwu man, he may be undersized but holy shit is he strong. He asserts his will on opposing offenses driving into the paint and is already one of the best shot blockers in the league. He’s productive off ball and can go hunting to the perimeter as often as scheme allows. His lateral quickness is elite and he shows a reasonable level of polish despite considering his age. Health has historically been an obstacle for Okongwu but he’s finishing up his first healthy offseason since highschool.
So what does he have to do to win the starting job? Stay healthy. That’s it.
But the question still remains, how does this team go from damn good to contender?
Well, just like every other team in the league they need far more production from their forwards on offense. When the shots aren’t falling they need a guy who can muscle his way into the paint and get the job done. But with limited draft assets they are banking on free agency vs a trade to land the final piece.
Maybe I’m just being a hopeful Portland fan thinking Hunter won’t be extended but I think the angle is to be a really fun team who’s a piece away and try to lure a stud away from his current team with the promise of a bigger role or more recognition.
So we look to free agency and 2024 is actually a really good year. To be clear I expect both of these guys to resign with their current squads but both Jaylen Brown and Pascal Siakam will be unrestricted free agents in 24. Also it’s worth noting Jaylen brown is extremely unlikely to extend early in Boston because they can’t max him until he’s unrestricted so it’s not a zero chance he considers other squads.
Siakam would be the dream addition to this current team. They don’t have the assets for an outright trade and likely won’t have the available cap with Dejounte eligible for extension the same year. But a sign and trade remains possible.
A core of
Trae Young
Dejounte Murray
Aj Griffin
Pascal Siakam
Onyeka Onkongwu
Is a pipe dream to keep Hawks fans off the ledge for the next few years haha.
