I've been to Singapore once and will be going back soon again for a visit. It's truly a remarkable nation with an impressive society. We in the US could stand to learn from Lee Kuan Yew's pragmatic approach to the economy, security and society building.

Singapore's success can't be achieved just by founding father Lee Kuan Yew alone. You cannot underestimate the strategic contributions of Mr Goh Swee and other pioneers like Mr Toh Chin Chye etc.

This recipe isn’t easy. First and most importantly you need a leader that is incorruptible. What a special leader.

Even though it's considered a benevolent dictatorship, still the country managed to survive due to being open economy and it's geographical location where there is no natural disaster. The society here is stablised and family friendly.

He was there to serve his people. I have seen some documentries where you can seen when he speaks about the poverty that his fellow country men where experiencing as if he was experiencing it with them. No man is perfect but this man and the people he led his country with achieved something great.

woah what a great video man. First time watching your videos. This is the type of history i lack knowledge of.. I know wars, depressions, rise, and fall. But I rarely get to know about to people who bridged gap's between peoples, and only until they all looked at each other as equals. What a man.. What a country.

I was told of this incident. In the early 70s, PSA wasn't that efficient with the underworld controlling the stevedoring operations but he was willing to change that scenario by actually simply "bought" the traffic manager from Port Klang (then Port Swettenham), by hijacking him when he was an economic class world tour (as the practice then for senior staff with 10 years of service ) by napping him at Tokyo airport by offering a few folds of his salary then ( though it must noted that Singapore dollar was about on par with the Ringgit then) plus continuing his tour on business class! Lee really knew what he wanted!

Charlie Munger (RIP) of Bertshire Hathaway has 2 busts at home. One is Benjamin Franklin. The other is Lee Kuan Yew!

Singapore is blessed to have a Lee Kuan Yew in 1965 when she became independent. Just look at her neighbour, Malaysia who became independent 2 yrs earlier in 1963. Malaysians did not have a Lee Kuan Yew. They had Mahathir instead. Both Prime Ministers ran their respective countries concurrently for around the same duration.

Singapore transformed from third world to first world within one lifetime. Today, Singapore is a developed cosmopolitan city state with excellent infrastructure and the best airport in the world for many years running. Malaysia is still a developing country which will never catch up unless Singapore keeps still and stops innovating.

Singapore is what it is today because of Lee Kuan Yew. In the words of Charlie Munger, "Lee Kuan Yew inherited a malaria swamp and turned it into an economic miracle. He holds the best record in the world for nation building". Malaysia on the other hand is what it is today because of corruption, ineffective leadership and outdated policies. If Malaysia had a Lee Kuan Yew or just half of him in 1963, Malaysia will be very different from what it is today.

Conversely, if Malaysia had a Lee Kuan Yew in 1963 and Singapore had Mahathir in 1965, this video will be all about Malaysia and how she became an economic powerhouse and a success story for other countries to emulate. And Singapore will still be developing, corrupt, backward, poor, and without any world first. So yes, its all about the quality of leadership in the one case. And the lack of it in the other. So yes, give credit when credit is due. Call him whatever you like but Singapore is an economic success story and its people are properous today because of Lee Kuan Yew.

Forget foreign leaders, Lee Kuan Yew is a well respected figure who is consistently cited by a many of these leaders both during and after his lifetime, many of whom visited Singapore to seek his wisdom and thoughts during their time, today, Mr Lee's books are studied keenly by leaders from the US to Japan and polsci educators who teach the next generation of leaders in reputable universities, some people who REALLY need to learn from Mr Lee are the younger generation of Singaporeans themselves.
Mr Lee's foreign policy style of being a fair and friendly partner to all nations, enabled Singapore to work with both the east and west and resulted in us having the world's strongest passport today, this is being forgotten by gen zs who view the world from an emotionally charged and ideologically driven pov which flies completely in the face of LKY's pragmatic approach to foreign policy. In addition, many of the younger generation are far more concerned with foreign wars in the middle east than affairs happening at home, even going so far as to support terrorist attacks on maritime shipping in the red sea which threatens Singapore's own maritime trade industry and causes increased prices for consumers in the name of so-called "humanity".
If this new generation fails to learn from LKY, they will ruin everything he spent his life building in the next 50 years.
