BEST Base Camp Emergency Radio Communications for Self Reliance and Preparedness
Dave Canterbury's best set up for Emergency communications working from a temporary base camp in the Wall tent, Hunters Camp. If or When Emergencies arise Communications are important and not always as easy as a cell phone call away, but equally important may be the ability to here local news, weather, road conditions etc.

Taking the technician test in two days! Been thinking about it for years… so seeing you do this is great timing - been following your channel for years - I say YES to more comms vids! Thanks Dave!

AWESOME tip for practicing Ham Radio! I often compare this to buying a firearm and putting it in a drawer until you need it, and never practicing with it.

Miss these comms videos. Got my General because of your ham series. Decided to learn CW last month and joined LICW and am already getting on the air with Morse. Hope you give it a go and thanks for what you do.

PSK31. Keyboard to keyboard. Point to point. Five watts gets you the world. In a survival scenario you can cut through heavy traffic more easily. However, power sources are always the key. Your videos are always top notch. You are a public service.

Good to see you highlighting ham technology Dave. I hike alone so I always bring a 2M/70cm for backup Coms.

Thanks for the video! I was just at a park this morning doing a POTA activation. I like to use POTA to test my portable setup. All of my needs fit in one backpack. I thought that was key for transport. Even my water bottle hooks onto the pack. I’m running the Wolf River coil also with a KB9VBR Magic carpet setup using EMF cloth. I really appreciate your enthusiasm and knowledge of amateur radio. Keep rockin’ it!

Thank you Dave. You inspired me to get into ham radio with my technician license. I got my general last summer to keep up with you. Today I was one of the teachers for a technician class which was a great way to give back. Tonight I’m struggling to get my brand new digirig working with varafm so I can use it with Winlink. Experimenting and practicing are key.

Awesome message Dave. I made similar comparisons relative to practice with your tools - on some other creators videos that sounded like they were short cutting the argument for planning, rather than practicing (SD...etc). Bobbing into even local traffic nets give you a vocabulary, meter, and discipline, to engage these same emergency based communications - before you need it, and possibly jamb up the flow of these nets. I remind people that even teenagers get licensed every day. It's not a huge learning curve. Heck, even Dave could do it. 😆 Thanks again.

Good content. IRLP works good too. if using repeaters. If the grid is down D Star won't work. I use it myself. Learning CW now. Low power communication.

Awesome video ham radio is still an awesome way of communication. You are still teasing us with the scout pack in the background.

Awesome Dave, 👍🏻. I’ve been following your output since 2008. I didn’t realise that’s when you started. You’re a massive inspiration bro. One day I hope to make one of your pathfinder school programs over there in 🇺🇸. I’m from 🇬🇧.

Dave, I just watched a guy in Florida using a Maxpedition hydration bag to carry everything he needs for his IC705 in case he lost power during a storm, hurricane, tornado. Thought you might be interested in showing another use for your hydration bag? I’m thinking of using this idea along with the Helikon-Tex fox trot to carry my water, tarp, food…… for a possible day hike or over nighter.

I got my general license several years ago. I have been on in a while, but I may have to get back into it.

What you miss out on by not being licensed, is community. I have friends I met on the radio at Big 10 universities, Buddies that interned at NASA, folks at defense contractors...I address them as Jon, or Susan, or Mike, etc...we all had breakfast in Livonia MI, this morning. Then the Livonia PD let us hang out in their EOC to chat and share. Fine business, Mr. Canterbury, 73 de KE8BZJ
