"I really meant it though..." the feels. I'm playing through the game again and actually doing the 21O sidequests this time, hoping there's something that will flesh out their relationship further. The last time you see 21O in the game, it definitely leaves you thinking there was more to their relationship than let on, but maybe it was also that 21O worked so hard to hide her persona from everyone.

so.. can we talk about how the operator tells 9s that the commander considers boosting the production of his model? they all know what's wrong with him. and that scanner types are curious and especially 9s is problematic for project yorha. they would not want more of his type unless they wanted more of type e, if you get what i mean.
they lied to him. they lied to his face to make him feel motivated and cherished and oh god, this is not good for my heart.

To answer everyone's questions:

E units and Operators retain their memories after being revived. S models do not. 2B's designation is not actually 2B; rather, it is 2E (E for "executioner"). 2B's job isn't to protect 9S or to be his partner. Her job is to assassinate him and erase his memory when he inevitably learns the truth about YoRHa and humanity's extinction. He has gained access to this information dozens, hundreds, or perhaps even thousands of times, with both 2B and Operator 21O remembering every single time 2B has had to kill him in grisly detail. 2B and 21O learned to distance themselves from him to protect themselves from growing attached and suffering when he forgets about them after his memory is wiped.

Over time, 21O developed a maternal instinct (or perhaps she always had it). Privately, she wants desperately to be a mother, and is shown to have been researching wombs and childbirth secretly. Towards the end of the game, when she has been infected with the logic virus and 9S has to kill her, she confesses that she has always wanted to be with him and wanted to have a child, though the wording that is used makes it ambiguous as to whether she wanted to have a child WITH 9S, or if she wanted 9S to BE her child. It's likely that not even she really knew.

Yeah. Real sad stuff.

Also, just a little tidbit, in part of 9S's playthrough, there's a line where I think Eve (maybe it's Adam? I can't remember) says to 9S, "You want to **** 2B, don't you?" This is commonly thought to be, "You want to fuck 2B, don't you?", but I don't believe that is the case. It is revealed in the late-game that, in order to encourage YoRHa units to engage the enemy, they are designed to experience lust at the idea of deadly combat. This would, of course, drive them to want to fight even more and kill more robots. Thus, the phrase most likely is, "You want to kill 2B, don't you?", because the thought of killing someone you love is far more sexual to YoRHa units than having sex with them. And, yes, Yoko Taro confirmed that the androids can have sex and even simulate childbirth, they just don't because YoRHa protocol prohibits most of them from knowing sex even exists.
