I literally thought the violin was a flute at first because it produced such a soft, airy sound with the mute on

I can't get over how striking the violin sounds in this recording. I know it's muted (throughout the whole piece, right?) ... but at times it's hard to even recognize it as a stringed instrument. Can anyone explain? Or is it just the mute
