More than likely it was a territorial boundary letting other tribes know that they were encroaching on their territory.

I wonder if cleaning that with D2 (only if it would be appropriate to do so) would help bringing the carvings back out better

Interesting. I'm curious if anyone can identify the animal. I do not recognize those horns for North America.
