The patented helicopter is an advanced version of Airbus' Eurocopter X3, which is currently under development.
The helicopter is part of Airbus’s high-speed, long-range, Hybrid Helicopter (H3) concept. The patented helicopter can fly at speeds exceeding 293 miles per hour. Typical speeds of modern helicopters ranges from 150-160 miles per hour. The next fastest helicopter is the US army's CH-47F Chinook, which files at 195 miles per hour. So it beats the next fastest helicopter by over 100 miles per hour, which is unprecedented.

How does it accomplish such fast speeds?

It is a hybrid helicopter which overcomes the horizontal flight deficiencies of the helicopters by introducing features of fixed-wing aircrafts.

The overall design of the helicopter features pleasing and well-contoured lines from nose to tail. It sports a finely sharpened nose assembly.

Main rotor installed on the top of the fuselage provides lift. Wings support a pair of propellers to provide thrust in high-speed forward flight. Power for the helicopters comes from twin engines, such as 2 x Rolls Royce Turbomeca RTM322 series turboshaft engines each delivering 2.270 shaft horsepower.

During high-speed forward flight, the pilot brings the main rotor to a low pitch. Effectively converting the helicopter into an airplane.

Helicopter has one more important unique feature. The helicopter does not have a tail rotor. Therefore, energy is not wasted along a long shaft to the tail rotor, instead it is added to the forward output. In conventional helicopters, the tail rotor is used to provide an anti-torque to stabilize the helicopter. In the patented helicopter, the anti-torque is provided instead by thrust variations of the two propellers.

The combination of higher cruise speeds and excellent VTOL performance also is well-suited for military missions, such as special forces operations, troop transport, combat SAR and medical evacuation.

This helicopter will usher in a new age of high-speed rotor wing flight

to add a fixed wing to a main rotor isn't something new ... has already been attempted several times ... it helps lowering the aerodynamic pressure difference between the two portions (180 degree on the backboard side vs the 180 degree on the starboard side ) of the main rotor ... this makes possible flight at higher speed, because the left portion of the rotor doesn't have to sustain the aerodynamic stress ... the downside, however, well it isn't just a helicopter ... it' s an hybrid ....gyroplanes also use this system sometimes, even if they work on a completely different principle !

patents should not be sent by mail should receive a bill warranted. not to unknowing.

Well good concept. I think cost of maintenance will be very high.

Too much looks like old Russian design of it! There come the question why European company make patent in USA!?!
Looks like is more easy to patent stolen technology there!!!...
Stupid but truth...

Airbus is going to make history again and again!

I was just about to ask how the counter torque would work, but I figured you might explain it near the end. Looks like a great design. It combines the best parts of a helicopter and the best parts of an airplane.

have they really made a prototype or is that just a mock-up at the end of the vid? its a cool idea but curious if it would actually work in real life.

fastest helicopter is the Westland Lynx (201 mph) max speed or 248mph with mods. Going faster than 287 mph is pointless for a helicopter as it would be illegal below 10, 000 feet (where helicopters fly).

so how does this compare with the v22 osprey? the osprey is undoubtedly more complicated with its swivel rotor design, but seems like it can easily do everything this aircraft can.

Not sure if my eyes see correctly... but the way the video is making the main rotor spin, shouldn't the high thrust wing rotor be the other one?

the ABC PROYECT IS SUPERIOR AND FASTER HELICOPTER.. MORE THAN S2.

and this looks like a nockoff of the already flying sicorsky x3

Американцы опять изобрели Автожир? и умудрились его запатентовать? :)

Again the Americans invented the Autogyro? and managed to patent it? :)
