RCWC: Tamiya PS-55 confusion? Experiment answers. Amazed by results.

Flat clear coat. How? When? Where? in? Out? Before? After? Experiment. Tamiya. PS-55 we know it works on the outside. But Tamiya says otherwise!? It works but helps flake shine! Conclusion: don’t use metallic paint unless you want lots of flake? It turns out beautiful!

The colour I used is Tamiya PS-18.

I’ve always used it on the outside, definitely works well. Have never tried it on the inside. You should do an inside vs outside

I thought the PS flat clear was a Primer when using TS paint, so the TS paint sticks.
I can't find a PS brown, no one makes brown lexan paint.
So I was gunna use the PS flat clear as a Primer for the TS brown.

PS-55 is for outside of the body,
It can also be used to stick TS paints on the inside of a polycarbonate body.

There is no right or wrong way. I’ve used it inside and also on the outside on the same body. If you are going for a really flat finish, try first PS-55 coat on inside. Then I have used flat gray automotive primer inside over the PS-55. It sticks great. That is the gray color I was going for. For a more flat finish look I then sprayed the PS-55 on the outside of the body. This is as flat as you can get a lexan body looking without putting flat paint on the outside. Yes, the PS-55 outside coat will scratch and chip a little under normal racing or bashing. Dark colors show these abrasions more so than light colors. Try it. Have fun experimenting like I do! We’ve all screwed the pooch before…..I’ll probably do it again. Keep creating! Don’t worry! They are only toys!!!

For every one saying it goes on outside? You never raced and you have tamiyas just to put them on shelves? You never ever spray it on the outside of the body...ever.. for the cars that are meant for driving and racing. Full contact will chip it off.

Great video, thnx! I like the effect of the more metallic colour.

I don't know about the instructions on the can, but I can definitely tell you, that Tamiya writes in the instructions, that this flat clear 55 is to be applied to the outside (for example in the manual for the closed MX-5 body, just checked it) -- after removing the protective foiling. The gloss of the paint mainly comes from the polycarbonate itself and you need to alter the surface to make it appear flat. That is also the reason there isn't a gloss and matte variant for the PS paints.

How's best to spray safely with this paint I have just got the tamiya paint and a 3M face mask with the padded respirators on either side is that safe enough from the vapour thinking of spraying outside on a non windy day or half in a garage half exposed to air? Worried don't want to get ill

It 100% gets used on the outside of the body. I believe the on can instructions to be an oversight due to most products being used on the inside as primary color. Of hundreds of colors and products, they are not going to spend thousands of dollars to change one word on the labeling. Hope this is helpful. Good test but no your recommendations are NOT as intended. Do more research/tests and try it outside. You CAN use it inside but with very little effect; just as you have proven in your video.

Generic instructions for both colours and clears. Colours go inside, Flat matt clear goes on the outside.

Sorry you were so badly misled. 😢 EVEN by the Can!
As you know by now, it Definitely doesn't go on the inside!!
This kind of misinformation has hurt many modelers over the years.

He’s 100% wrong.
Flat goes on the outside. Lexington, hard bodies, static models…It should be the first thing you see
